Description:

I will present an overview of the process for planning multi-object spectroscopy using the NIRSpec MSA, and will demonstrate the software tool to help plan MOS observations using a typical science case. The MSA Planning Tool (MPT) is currently available in APT (apt.stsci.edu).  I will illustrate how parameters used by MPT can be tailored to specific science cases. The case I will highlight is the observation of high redshift galaxies in the HUDF. Target weighting, Monte Carlo shuffling, and shutter-centering constraints will be utilized to optimize the design of dithered observations. I will demonstrate how to examine planning results to assess the quality of the plan, and finally, create an observation from the plan.
