Phone

The Phone utility is a convenient utility for communicating with other users. Phone differs from Mail in that it establishes a direct link between two users who are both simultaneously logged in.

To start the phone program, type PHONE at the VMS $ prompt. When the % prompt appears, type HELP to learn more about the program, or simply type in a username to phone another user. (The username can be preceded by the command DIAL, but the command is implied.)

You can see who is logged on to a particular node by using the DIR command. For example, to see all of the user logged on to AVION you would type:

% DIR AVION

If someone is phoning you and you wish to answer them, type:

$ PHONE ANSWER

to exit the phone facility. Help is available from anywhere in the phone facility by typing %HELP (don't forget the % character!)
