From LUCAS@avion.stsci.edu Fri Jan 12 13:30:38 1996 Subject: flanks.txt for posting with KPNO flanking fields on WWW (handout text) To: ferguson@stsci.edu X-Vms-To: FERGUSON Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT Hubble Deep Field Flanking Fields - Basic Information Eight flanking fields were done around the Hubble Deep Field, primarily in order to provide ground-based spectroscopists with targets for long-slit spectroscopic observing, and with an eye to the future as preparation for possible new observations with next-generation HST instruments as well. Here are the HDF flanking field positions, extracted from the RPS2 observing file as submitted. The telescope's actual pointings should have been very close to these. Note that these coordinates are all referenced to the WFPC2 WFALL-FIX aperture position which is on the WF3 chip and 10" off from the apex of the WFPC2 pyramid in both x and y, which means it is on the WF3 ( middle WFC chip ) at a position ~14" from the pyramid at ~45 degrees on the diagonal between chip boundaries. ( The apertures are all defined in the HST Phase II Proposal Instructions complete with illustrations if you want to see more about this. ) We also tried to set up the flanking fields so that there was about a 4" overlap between all adjoining fields in the extended mosaic of flanking fields. We did NOT try to make minute adjustments to the ORIENT wrt North to keep CCD columns and rows aligned across the flanking fields mosaic, however, as it was deemed by the working group to be a very small effect and inconsequential for our purposes. All were done at the SAME ORIENT which was U3=292 degrees, which corresponds to the PA_V3=112 in the data headers since U3 and V3 are 180 degrees apart. In the KPNO image with the overlay on the reverse side, the PC chip of each field is marked with the total number of orbits allocated to observing that field. The central "Deep" field is evident by the 150 orbits marked on its PC chip. Also shown is the scale of the image, denoted by the 150" marker on the left side, corresponding to the length of two WFPC2 WFC chips side-by-side, adjusted for the overlap between adjacent chips. Again, the coordinates listed here below are for the WFPC2 WFALL-FIX position.
