HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2546 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/24/00 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/26/00 Daily Status Report as of 025/0000Z 1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 8460 (Cycle 8 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8192 (A Snapshot Survey of Probable Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a snapshot survey images of probable nearby galaxies UGC4483 and UGC-A86. The census of galaxies in the Local Volume of space is very incomplete, particularly at the faint end. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 8243 (SINS: The Supernova Intensive Study - Cycle 8) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of supernova SN1999EM. Supernovae reveal the last stages of stellar evolution, create the chemical history of the Universe, energize the interstellar gas, and occupy the center of attention for the extragalactic distance scale and cosmology. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-22 8498 (Internal Monitor - Post-TEC Turn On) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain routine internal observations in order to monitor basic instrument health, and optical alignment (K-spots, INTFLATS, VISFLATS, UVFLATS, bias, Darks). The observations completed nominally. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8502 (CCD Functional for SMOV3a) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure the baseline performance and commandability of the CCD subsystem. The proposal completed normally. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 8269 (The Morphological Evolution of Field Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the near-infrared field galaxies LYNX-A and LYNX-B in order to study their morphology. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed S/C 5582 (FOC/48 Monthly Activation (Camera Section Only): Cycle 4) This proposal was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed FOC/96 7923 (FOC F/96 Turn-on) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to take an internal flat and a dark to ensure that the 30-day limit for the FOC is not exceeded. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8101 (High Resolution Imaging of the Core of Maffei 1, the Nearest Normal Massive Elliptical Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain high resolution optical images of the center of the galaxy Maffei 1, which is the nearest normal intermediate-to-giant elliptical galaxy. The proposal ended nominally. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 8249 (A Strong Lensing Survey of the Mass Distribution in X-ray Luminous Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used for a gravitational lensing survey of the central regions of 16 X-ray luminous clusters from a statistically complete sample. The observations completed with no problems. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD 8323 (Herbig-Haro Jets Irradiated by Massive OB Stars) The WF/PC-2 and the Space Telescope Imaging Telescope (CCD) were used to observe Herbig-Haro jets powered by young stars. Among the hoped for results are the precise determination of the mass loss rate through a jet, and the nature of the flow behavior in the jet launch and collimation region. The proposal completed nominally. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 8230 (Snapshot Survey of Dynamically Close Galaxy Pairs from z=0.1 to z=0.5) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of galactic cluster Gal-Clus-0. This is to obtain snapshot images of a large, well-defined, and dynamically selected sample of close galaxy pairs at moderate redshift. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 8390 (Expansion Parallax Distances to Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebula NGC6826 in order to study its parallax distance. The largest impediment to our understanding of planetary nebulae is the lack of reliable distances. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 8242 (Imaging of Dust Structures and Star Formation in the Disk-Halo Interface of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of five edge-on spirals to study star formation and dusty interstellar clouds in the disk-halo interface of these galaxies. As described in HSTAR 7483 and 2.1, the acquisition for this approximate six-hour proposal defaulted to fine lock backup, possibly affecting four observations. Then, as described in HSTAR 7484 and 2.1, the re-acquisition failed and seven observations were affected when the take data flag remained down. 1.18 Completed STIS/MA2 8275 (Ultraviolet Snapshots of 3CR Radio Source Counterparts at Low Z) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of the radio galaxy 3C227.0. Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects, representing one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena, while extraordinarily useful as probes of their environments and of the early Universe. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions: 14 Successful: 14 Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 18 Successful: 17 The acquisition at 025/172456Z failed to fine lock backup on FGS-1 only when the scan search limit was exceeded on FGS-3. HSTAR 7483 was written. The proposal described in 1.17 may have been affected by this occurrence. Per HSTAR 7484, the re-acquisition at 025/185923Z failed when the scan search limit was exceeded on FGS-1 (the previous acquisition had failed to fine lock on one FGS only). The proposal described in 1.17 was affected. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled: 27 Successful: 27 2.3 Operations Notes: Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV) activities continue. Real-time operations transferred to Building and CCS string "G" at 025/0030Z due to the heavy snow storm in the Goddard area. No problems have been encountered. The flight operations team has faithfully reported to their work stations despite the fact that most of Goddard has been declared closed for the 25th and the 26th. Using ROP SR-1A, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared once. Per ROP IC-2 and an operations note, SSA transmitter #2 was turned on and off three times. The NSSC-1 status buffer was dumped at 024/1814Z, per ROP NS-3. The ephemeris tables were uplinked at 025/0211Z as directed by ROP DF-07A. The STIS EMC reset at 026/011936Z. The STIS flight software error counter was reset at 026/0142Z as directed by ROP NS-12. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of SMOV and normal science observations and calibrations. /CAW
