HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2561 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/15/00 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/16/00 Daily Status Report as of 047/0000Z 1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 8460 (Cycle 8 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.2 Completed STIS/MA1 8295 (Anomalously Blue Giants: Possible Precursurs to Subdwarf B Stars) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-6791-19. Confirmation of the presence of hot companions would lend strong support to the theory that the anomalous giants are the binary precursors to the sdB class of stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8446 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Astrometric Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster Omega-Cen as part of the astrometric monitoring program. This program will verify relative positions of WF/PC-2 chips with respect to one another. A K-Spot calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 8439 (Bias Monitor-Part 2 C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and track the evolution of hot columns. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.5 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 8445 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Cycle 8 Earth flat calibration observations. This is to obtain sequences of earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8437 (Dark Monitor-Part 2 C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor the darks. The proposal completed nominally. 1.7 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8549 (POMS Test Proposal: Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation I) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make low galactic latitude, non-scripted parallel observations as part of a POMS test proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8146 (A Search for Binary L-Dwarfs) The WF/PC-2 was used to search for close binaries amongst the sample of 37 low-temperature L dwarfs, identified primarily in the course of the DENIS and 2MASS near-infrared surveys. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 8340 (Probing the Kinematics of the Narrow-Line Region in Seyfert Galaxies with Slitless Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to perform studies of the gas kinematics of the narrow-line regions in Seyfert galaxies. Previous studies indicate complex velocity fields, with evidence for both gravitational and non-gravitational forces. The proposal completed nominally. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8199 (Local Cosmology: The Nearby Flow Field and its Structure) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NCG2863 in order to study its nearby flow field and structure. Very little data are available to constrain the velocity field of galaxies in the local neighborhood {<= 500 km/sec}. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed FGS 8334 (HD 98800: An Opportunity to Measure True Masses for Low-Mass PMS Stars) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of the low mass pre-main sequence (PMS) star HD98800 in order to measure its true mass. HD 98800 became interesting when IRAS found it to have a large infrared excess, indicating a substantial dust disk. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed STIS/CCD 8202 (Bright Quasar Close Lensing Search) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of HCLQ1039-2 as part of a second generation survey to search for bright lensing quasars. With the restored PSF, new images will be considerably more sensitive to the presence of both close separation and faint lens components, and because STIS reaches two magnitudes fainter the PC, the new snapshot images will have much greater dynamic range. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/MA2 7410 (Deep UV Imaging of the Hubble Deep Field) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of Hubble Deep Field HDF-STIS-P. The observations will extend the searches for Lyman break galaxies to B~ 29, two magnitudes fainter than possible with the existing HDF data and more than four magnitudes fainter than the current limit of ground-based spectroscopy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 8317 (Mass Accretion Rates for Pre-Main Sequence Intermediate Mass Stars) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1 and MA2) was used to obtain the first direct, accurate measurements of mass accretion rates for intermediate mass {1.5M{sun} to 3.5M{sun}} T Tauri stars}, precursors of the Beta Pic- type stars. The observations completed nominally. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 8552 (The Crab Synchrotron Nebula: Short Version) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain observations to accompany Chandra observations of the inner Crab synchrotron nebula. The proposal completed nominally. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions: 7 Successful: 7 Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 7 Successful: 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled: 17 Successful: 17 2.3 Operations Notes: Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV) continues with the operations team utilizing CCS string "A". "A" string was down for three hours, from 046/2224Z until 047/0130Z, for Cmass work. Using ROP NS-5, an SI C&DH error was reset at 046/1240Z. HSTAR 7507 was written when it took over 47 minutes to build an engineering file for a fine attitude determination, a process while normally takes 3-4 minutes. Per ROP DF-18A, the ESB was dumped and cleared at 046/1820Z. There was a STIS EMC retry at 047/090030Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of SMOV and normal science observations and calibrations. /CAW
