HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2589 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/27/00 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/28/00 Daily Status Report as of 088/0000Z 1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8457 (UV Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain a series of Ultraviolet Earth flats. The observations were completed with no reported problems. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8460 (Cycle 8 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD/MA2 8342 (Abundances in Halo Stars and Galactic Element Formation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1 and CCD) was used to make observations of star HD6755 as part of a study of the abundances in halo stars and galactic element formation. The results for the very oldest galactic stars will also provide an important, and independent, age determination for the Galaxy and hence constrain cosmological age estimates. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed STIS/MA2 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8246 (The Youngest Massive Star Clusters in the SMC as Clues to Star Formation in the Early Universe) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations the young massive star cluster SMC-N88-38 that is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. These are the youngest massive stars accessible to direct observations at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 8442 (Cycle 8 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain dark calibration dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. Over an extended period these data will also provide a monitor of radiation damage to the CCDs. The proposal completed with no reported anomalies. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 8439 (Bias Monitor-Part 2 C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and track the evolution of hot columns. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8301 (A Snapshot Survey of X-ray Selected Central Cluster Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the x-ray, central cluster galaxy A2009. Central cluster galaxies are the most massive stellar systems known and have been used as standard candles for many decades. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8549 (POMS Test Proposal: Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation I) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make low galactic latitude, non-scripted parallel observations as part of a POMS test proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8146 (A Search for Binary L-Dwarfs) The WF/PC-2 was used to search for close binaries amongst the sample of 37 low-temperature L dwarfs, identified primarily in the course of the DENIS and 2MASS near-infrared surveys. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8437 (Dark Monitor-Part 2 C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor the darks. The proposal completed nominally. 1.13 Completed STIS/CCD 8187 (STIS Imaging of the Deep NICMOS Parallel Fields: Building on the NICMOS Legacy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of field #1237 which was previously observed using deep images from the NICMOS camera. The STIS images will yield visual morphologies to magnitudes of 24.5 and quantitative measures of image structure to 26.5 or fainter in two orbits. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 8459 (Decontaminations and Associated Observations Pt. 2/2) The WF/PC-2 was used to perform the monthly decons. Also included are instrument monitors tied to decons: photometric stability check, focus monitor, pre- and post-decon internals {bias, intflats, kspots, & darks}, and UV throughput checks. The observations were completed nominally. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD 8236 (Black Holes and Gas Disks in a Complete Sample of Radio-Loud Ellipticals - II: Kinematics) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the radio-loud elliptical galaxy NGC-3801. From these observations we will measure the black hole masses, determine the nature, kinematics, and structure of the central gas disks and obtain a modeled upper limit to their mass accretion rates. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed STIS/MA1/MA2 8425 (MAMA Full Field Sensitivity Monitor & PSF Check) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1 and MA2) was used to make observations of globular cluster NGC-6681 as part of a MAMA full field sensitivity monitor and point spread function (PSF) check. The purpose of this program is to monitor the sensitivity of the MAMA detectors over the full field. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.17 Completed STIS/MA1/MA2 8144 (UV Spectroscopic Snapshots of FUSE AGN Targets) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1 and MA2) was used to make far ultraviolet spectrographic snapshot observations of the FUSE AGN target MRK463. This object is currently scheduled to be observed by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer {FUSE}. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed STIS/CCD/MA2 8280 (Origins, Structure and Evolution of Magnetic Activity in the Cool Half of the H-R Diagram: A STIS Survey) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA2) was used to make observations of star HD48329 to carry out part of a major ultraviolet spectral survey of "coronal" late-type stars. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 8445 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Cycle 8 Earth flat calibration observations. This is to obtain sequences of earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. Per ROP NS-3, the NSSC-1 status buffer was dumped and reset at 088/0638Z.
