HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #848 PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST Daily Status Report as of 081/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed GHRS/2 3496 (Ultraviolet Atlas of Sirius) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to obtain spectra of the star Sirius in the WSCAN Mode to get accurate flux distribution and line profiles at ultraviolet wavelenghts. Thirteen observations were received and displayed. The onboard target acquisition found the target, and the flux counts were 94,930. The following observations were reported to look okay, but the wave length calibrations were completely swamped by light from the target. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of FOC/96 4804 (UV Imaging of Nearby Galaxies with FOC/96) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultraviolet snapshots of three different nearby galaxies UGC-5079, UGC-2154, and UGC-2669. The first observation was received in real-time, and displayed in the OSS. It was reported to look okay. The other two observations were taken during LOS, and their observations still remain of the science tape recorder. They will be analyzed later. No telemetry problems were reported. 1.3 Completed PC 4769 (Structure of Quasars and Related Objects) The Planetary camera was used to take one long exposures and several short exposures of the classic quasi-stellar object 3C273 (which is a strong radio source). A total of six observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to look okay. 1.4 Completed WFC/PC 4109 (WF/PC Calibration: Rapid Internal Monitor) Both the Planetary Camera and the Wide Field Camera were used to make a series of four internal flat observations using filter F555W. This is to check for new forms of contamination (i.e., measles and daisies), and the return of quantum efficiency hysteresis. All four observations were reported to look okay. 1.5 Completed GHRS/2 3468 (UV Molecular Band in HD44179) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make five ultraviolet of object HD44179 (aka, the Red rectangle). The Guide star acquisition was made in course track. The onboard spiral target acquisition was executed without problems. The return to brightest object option was not used. The target was found in the first map, and the final search flux was at 2399 counts. 1.6 Completed GHRS/2 3608 (12c-13c Isotope Ratio in Planetary Nebulae) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make one observation of the planetary nebula LMC-N122 which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They were reported to look okay. 1.7 Uplinked Updated Ephemeris Tables, Per MOSES 2871 1.8 Completed PC 3872 (Blue Stragglers in the Cores of Globular Clusters) The Planetary Camera was used to take a series of sixteen images of globular cluster NGC-5904 looking for blue straggler stars. All sixteen observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They all were reported to look okay. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 4097 (FOS Locations of spectra: Y-Base Maps) The Y-Base Test was conducted using the Faint Object Spectrograph. Images of the internal Pt-Ne lamp were made through the 0.3" aperture for every grating. The blues side wave length calibrations were executed without problems. They were received and displayed in the OSS. Except for some data hits, the observations looked okay. One wave length calibrations was received in real time on the red side, and looked okay. The other observations were completed during LOS, and still remain on the science tape recorder. No problems were reported with the telemetry. 1.10 Completed WFC/PC 4207 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: Photometric Calibration Monitor) Ultraviolet flux calibrations observations were made using both the Planetary Camera and the Wide Field Camera using standard star BD+75D325. All observation were executed in fine lock. The first six observations were received and displayed in real time. There were some data dropouts noted during the transmission. The next six observations occurred during LOS and still remain on the science tape recorder. They will be analyzed later. 1.11 Complete PC 4593 (Positioning of the Geminga Optical Counterpart) The Planetary Camera was used to make observations of the strong gamma-ray source called Geminga to obtain an accurate position of its optical counterpart. The gyros were placed in high mode for two HGBU data takes. The first data take was at 078/2224Z to 079/0128Z. A second HGBU data take was done on Day 080.
