HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #853 PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST Daily Status Report as of 088/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: All of the scientific observational proposals which were scheduled during this period were not initiated due to the current Safe Mode event. An intercept back into the SMS will be initiated as soon as is possible. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: There was no FGS or FHST activity due to the Safe Mode event. 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 0 Successful : 0 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 0 Successful : 0 Losses of Lock : 0 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 0 Successful : 0 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Note: The HST entered Software Sunpoint Safemode on Wednesday , March 24, 1993 at 1646Z. The preliminary indications for this event are that the Solar Arrays (SAs) electronics sensed an erroneous position to the onboard computer. HST operations continue with the vehicle in software sunpoint safemode, SADE 1 was powered on Saturday, March 27, 1993. The SA angles seen from SADE 1 were incorrect and did not match those put out by SADE 2. An eight degree SA slew was commanded under SADE 2 control. The angles seen from SADE 1 did not change. SADE 1 is therefore not usable at this time. An anomaly investigation team composed of NASA, ESA, and contractor personnel has been formed. The team is analyzing the results of the test conducted last Saturday. Further tests with SADE 1 are being considered in order to isolate the problem. The current plan is to resume science operations at 091/000Z. To ensure that the HST will be safe in event of a failure of SADE 2, the SAs will remain fixed at 90 degrees (normal to the sun at +V3 to sun attitude). This week's SMS is being replanned to restrict the vehicle attitude to within 25 degrees of the SA normal. A team composed of NASA, ESA, STScI, and contractor personnel is developing options to relax this current restriction. Recommendations and plans for future operations will be developed in the near-term. Based on the current best estimates the short term plans for continuing the science operations are that: * Recovery of the spacecraft to Normal Mode on Monday, March 29, 1993 at 1900Z. * Start the Health and safety load at 090/0000Z. * Begin SMS 091 execution at 091/0000Z * The solar angle will be limited between 65 and 115 degrees (i.e., 90 + or _ 15 degrees). 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: All of the the scientific observational proposals which normally would be scheduled during this period will not be initiated due to the current Safe Mode event. An intercept back into the SMS will be initiated as soon as is possible. 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. -END-
