HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #943 PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST Daily Status Report as of 216/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOS/BL 5052 (FOS Cycle 3 Focus, X pitch, and Y pitch) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make seven calibration observations as part of a focus and a X and Y pitch test. All seven observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They were reported to look okay. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars Cycle 3 High) Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of the binary star system HD163840 to obtain its orbital elements. These observations are important since most of the estimates of stellar mass are made by observing elements of these systems. The observations occurred during a LOS, and the OSS was not able to monitor the observations. The data will be analyzed later after a science tape recorder playback. 1.3 Completed FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars Cycle 3 High) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the possible binary star VA119 which is located in the Hyades open cluster. The OSS monitored the observation, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed FOS/BL 3862 (The Excitation of the Atmosphere of Planetary Satellites) The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to attempt to make spectral observations of Jupiter's moon Io as it egresses from the planet's shadow. The baseline guide star acquisition failed (Search Radius Exceeded). The decision observation did not execute. The real-time uplink was canceled, because there was no decision observation available to calculated a maneuver. The PCS uplinked an ARU/PRT, and the reacquisition was partially successful, making course track (Fine Lock was requested). (See Operations Note 2.4) The subsequent observations completed, although guiding was done using single star course track rather then fine lock. Weak spectra were seen in the next two observations, but there was no clear evidence that the moon IO was in the aperture. 1.5 Uplinked Updated Ephemeris Tables, Per MOSES 2871 1.6 Completed FOS/RD/BL 4976 (UV Rotation Light Curves for Pluto, and Charon's UV Spectrum - Split) The Faint object Spectrograph was used to make a TALED exposure and subsequent other spectral observations of the planet Pluto and its moon Charon. The TALED observation was received in real time and displayed. This TALED pseudo image of the science aperture was well exposed. After a corrective SIP maneuver was uplinked to the spacecraft, spectral observations were made of the planet Pluto. The observations were executed in fine lock. The spectral observations were received and displayed for the GO, and hard copies were made. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 4 Failed Guide star acquisition at 216/0056Z.
