HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #960 PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST Daily Status Report as of 239/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars - Cycle 3 High) Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of the binary star system HD193194 to obtain its orbital elements. These observations are important since most of the estimates of stellar mass are made by observing elements of these systems. The astrometry was monitored and no problems were seen in the telemetry. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of HSP/POL/UV2 5082 (X-Ray binaries Part 2 - Cycle 3 High) The High Speed Photometer was used to make 15 photometric and polarimetric observations of X-Ray binary star HD153919 (aka, 3U1700_37) to obtain more information about the structure and condition in the gas streams connecting the primary star to its neutron companion. All 15 observations were received and displayed in real-time. The observations were reported to be nominal. 1.3 Completed WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats Narrow. 2) The Wide Field Camera was used to make two Earth flat calibration images to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The observations used the narrow band filters, both with and without neutral density filters. The observations were received and displayed. One observation was reported to be saturated, and the others were okay. 1.4 Completed FGS 5062 (Scale Cycle 2 Calibration: Fixed) Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to calibrate the scale in the central region using standard star HD16620. The observations were executed as scheduled. The observations could not be monitored because line #720 was down. The fail-over to line #732 was not accomplished until after the observation had completed. 1.5 Completed FGS 5118 (Monitor the Long Term Stability of the FGSs Revised) FGS #3 was used to measure the position of standard stars OF-41, OF-83, and OF-40 to monitor its internal positional stability. The astrometry was monitored and no problems were seen in the telemetry, except for one recentering event which occurred near the start of the first observation. 1.6 Completed Two Set of FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars - Cycle 3 High) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the possible binary star VA637 which is located in the Hyades open cluster. The OSS monitored the observation, and engineering link was reported to have been lost for part of the observation. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2) The Planetary Camera was used to make two standard Earth calibrations images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and narrow filters were used, with and without neutral density filters. Both observations were executed as scheduled, and the observations were reported to look normal. 1.8 Completed GHRS/2 4835 (Composition of Gas in Individual Interstellar Clouds: Cycle 3 High) The High Resoltion Spectrograph was used to make observations of class B 0.5 Type II halo star HD149881 to look for absorption line from C, N, O, Si, Mg, and S which is contained in gas in the interstellar clouds which lie alone the line of sight of the target star. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 16 Successful : 15 FHST #1&2 failed at 239/0533Z to perform three axis maneuver after type 2 slew.
