HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #983 PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST Daily Status Report as of 273/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Four Sets of WFC 5075 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: (WFC Flats Wide. 1) Observations were made to make a standard calibration to obtain Earth flats using the Wide Field Camera. A total of six observations were taken. Four were reported to be saturated, and two were okay. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WFC 4381 (HST Medium - Deep Survey - Cycle 3) The Wide Field Camera was used to make three sets of medium-deep high latitude sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and the images were reported to be full of stars. 1.3 Completed FOS/BL 3441 (Post Asymptotic Giant Branch Evolution in the Magellanic Clouds) The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make five spectral observations of the planetary nebula SMC-SM40 which is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The observations were monitored were possible. Although the onboard target acquisition observation appeared okay, the confirmation image showed the target to be far from the aperture center. With the help of Flight Operations an unscheduled corrective maneuver was uplinked to the spacecraft. The first spectral observation was very underexposed. The other observations were reported to look very good. The SIP did improve the pointing. 1.4 Completed PC 5027 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: Rapid Internal Monitor - Part 2) The Planetary Camera was used to make internal flat observations to check for quantum efficiency hysteresis. Two images were taken, and both were reported to look normal. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats Narrow. 2) The Wide Field Camera was used to make two Earth flat calibration images to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The observations used the narrow band filters, both with and without neutral density filters. Both observations were reported to look normal. 1.6 Completed FGS 4938 (Parallaxes of Hyades Cluster Members - Cycle 3 High) The Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of the star VA-645 which is a member of the open Hyades star cluster. These observations are intended to determine the parallax of the stars and compute the distance modulus for the cluster. This will help improve the estimates of distances to other galaxies, which are base on the distance of Cepheid variable stars. Most of the observation occurred during LOS. That section of the observation which was monitored was reported to look okay. 1.7 Completed WFC 4848 (GTO Low Latitude Program - Cycle 3 High) The Wide Field Camera was used to make two high latitude medium-deep sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. Both observations were received and displayed. They were reported to look normal. 1.8 Completed FOC/96 3881 (Crane, Augmentation, Galaxies & Clusters) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the bright nearby galaxy NGC-6257 to learn more about its stellar content and nuclear structure. This is a continuation of proposal 1057. The observation was executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WFC 4849 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program - Cycle 3 High) The Wide Field Camera was used to make high latitude sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars - Cycle 3 High) Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of the binary star system HD-193194 to obtain its orbital elements. These observations are important since most of the estimates of stellar mass are made by observing elements of these systems. The astrometry was monitored and no problems were seen in the telemetry. 1.11 Completed PC 4764 (Investigation of the Dynamics of Binary Asteroids) The Planetary Camera was used to make images of the asteroid 532 Herculis which is suspected to be a binary asteroid based on its unusual light curve. The observations were received and displayed. They were reported to look okay. 1.12 Completed PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2) The Planetary Camera was used to make standard Earth calibrations images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and narrow filters were used, with and without neutral density filters. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed FOC/96 3504 (High - Spatial - Resolution Imaging and Spectroscopy of AGN: Cycle 2) The Faint Object Camera was used to make polarization images of galaxy NGC-1068 to look for possible active galactic nuclei. The images were taken in polarized light to provide information about the source hidden behind the obscuring torus. The OSS monitored the observations and assessed the data quality. No problems were reported. 1.14 Completed WFC 5201 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program - Cycle 3 High - Continued) The Wide Field Camera was used to make high latitude sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Note: The JIS #3 Simulation (Deployment) was successfully completed yesterday (Wednesday Sept. 29,1993).
