HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #984 PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST Daily Status Report as of 274/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed PC 5073 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: PC Flats Wide. 2)) The Planetary Camera was used to make 18 Earth flat calibration images using different filter combinations. These images will be used for flat field corrections of science images made with the PC. All 18 images were received and displayed. eight of the images were reported to be saturated, two were underexposed, and the others were okay. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2) The Planetary Camera was used to make four standard Earth calibrations images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and narrow filters were used, with and without neutral density filters. The observations were executed as scheduled. All four images were received and displayed. Two were reported to be saturated, and two were okay. 1.3 Completed GHRS/2 1168 (Interstellar Carbon and Oxygen Cycle 2) The High Resolution spectrograph (Echelle Mode) was used to obtain high signal to noise ratio spectra of star HD38771 (Visual magnitude 2.06) to which will hopefully show interstellar absorption lines of carbon and oxygen This will help determine the density and temperatures of the gas within the interstellar cloud. The tracking for these observations was done in course track, instead of the expected fine lock (See Operations Note 2.1). Nevertheless, the spectra looked good, with a strong signal. 1.4 Completed WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats Narrow. 2) The Wide Field Camera was used to make Earth flat calibration images to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The observations used the narrow band filters, both with and without neutral density filters. A total of four observations were received. One observation was reported to be saturated, one was partially saturated, and the others were okay. 1.5 Completed FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 3 High) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the possible binary star VA-6 which is located in the Hyades open cluster. The OSS monitored the observation, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed Three Sets of WFC 4848 (GTO Low Altitude Parallel Program: Cycle 3 High) The Wide Field Camera was used to make one high latitude medium-deep sky survey observation taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observation was received and displayed. It was reported to look okay. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD/BL 4805 (The Ultraviolet Emission Spectra of an H II Region) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both red and Blue Sides) were used to make ultraviolet spectral observations fo the Hour-Glass Section (i.e., the H II emission region) of the Lagoon Nebula (aka, M-8). The intent is to determine the composition and structure of this H II region. The onboard target acquisition was successful. No problems were reported with the spectral observations. 1.8 Uplinked Updated Ephemeris Tables, Per MOSES 2871 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5075 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats Wide. 1) Observations were made to make a standard calibration to obtain Earth flats using the Wide Field Camera. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WFC 5076 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats Wide. 2) Routine Earth flat calibration exposures were taken with the Wide Field Camera. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No problems were reported. 1.11 Completed PC 4902 (HST Medium - Deep Survey - Part 2: Low Latitude - Cycle 3 High) The Planetary Camera was used to make a long exposure taken in parallel with the prime science observation. Areas of interest are galactic structure and evolution. There is also the possibility of serendipitous discoveries. The observation was received and displayed in the OSS. It was reported to look okay. 1.12 Completed FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars - Cycle 3 High) Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of the binary star system HD182369 to obtain its orbital elements. These observations are important since most of the estimates of stellar mass are made by observing elements of these systems. The astrometry was monitored and no problems were seen in the telemetry. 1.13 Completed FOS/BL 4866 (Mass Exchange binaries(FOS 34) Augmentation: Cycle 3 High) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make spectropolarmetric observations of the binary star system V1727-Cygni. This is a continuation of proposal 3651. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 273/2020Z Acquisition failed to obtain Fine Lock and went to Course Track.
