HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1069 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 038/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 4763 (WF/PC-2 QE Throughput Measurement) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet exposures of the UV flux-standard star BD+75D325 to be used for alignment studies. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. One exposure was underexposed by 3.5 seconds due to a recentering event. 1.2 Completed Four Sets of FOS/RD 4908 (SMOV FOS/FGS Fine Alignment) The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make observations of cluster NGC-188-225 to find the location of its apertures, the plate scale, and the orientation and separation of its detectors. Each part was executed on both the Red and Blues Sides. A corrective SIP maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. The subsequent observations were reported to look fine. During a second series of observations a total of four reacquisitions failed. (See Operations Note 2.1). Subsequent observations did not occur. During a thrid series of observations an observation exceeded an overlight sum for one minor frame. As a result thye FOS was safed. Several Status Buffer error messages were received. (See Operation Note 2.4) 1.3 Completed COSTAR/U 4732 (COSTAR/GHRS Fine Alignment X-Tilt/Y-Tilt) A 3X3 tilt-scan test was performed to fine tune the values for the best X-tilt and Y-tilt positions of the GHRS tilt mirrors of COSTAR. The target was the 12th magnitude standard star AGK81D266. Several SIP corrective maneuvers were successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. No anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 camera was used to make a series of routine dark, bias, K-Spot, and internal flat calibration images to monitor the instrument's performance. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey for Blue Stragglers in Magellanic Cluster Cores) The WF/PC-2 was used to make short exposure snapshot images of the blue straggler stars located in populous clusters NGC-2134, NGC-2257, NGC-416, and NGC-1856. A populous cluster is the Magellanic Cloud equivalent of a galactic globular cluster. The observations were made with two different color filters. The intent is to find out if blue straggler stars exist within these clusters. All of the images were received and displayed. They were reported to look nominal. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 4721 (WF/PC-2 Decontamination and TEC Turn On) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet photometric observations of the star standard A+81D262. All four sets of CCDs were used. The images were received and displayed in the OSS. No anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of FOC/96 5185 (Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the planetary nebula LMC-N66 which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud to determine its mass and age. The images were received and displayed. No anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of FOC/96 5156 (Optical Emission in Double Radio Galaxy Lobes: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the compact hot spots in the double radio lobes of radio galaxy 3C285 located in Pictoris to search for optical counterparts of the radio hot spots. Two images were taken, and one was received and displayed. The other image still remains on the science tape recorder. 1.9 Completed Two Set of S/C 5254 (GHRS SMOV Side 1 Activation) The OSS verified that the GHRS DET1 DEB1, and DEB2 power came on as scheduled. No anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5098 (UV Spectra and Images of Low Redshift QSOs: Cycle 4 Observations) The WF/PC-2 was used to make two ultraviolet images of the Low-Z quasi-stellar object PKS0454-22 to obtain images and spectra of the surrounding galaxy. Both images were received and displayed. They both were reported to look okay. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV-WF/PC-2 Flat Fields Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth calibration images and visual internal flat images. Six images were received and displayed. They were reported to be okay. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 20 Successful : 20 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 19 Successful : 14 Reacquisition failures at 036/0101, 0211, 0238, and 0414Z occurred because of an attitude error caused by a timing conflict with a recentering event. The problem is under investigation. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :35 Successful :35 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: During the past week, SMOV activities continued on or ahead of the SMOV milestone schedule. WF/PC-2 successfully performed decontamination exercises, flat field calibration, QE and throughput measurements, point spread function characterization, and relative photometric calibration. GHRS completed its COSTAR coarse alignment activities, began the COSTAR fine alignment focus operations, and executed side 1 testing. COSTAR/FOS fine alignment operations were executed nominally. In addition, a spacecraft disturbance test was conducted along with an FGS KFACTOR verification test. On Sunday, at approximately 1318Z, the FOS safed when the overlight safing limit test failed during proposal 4908. Initial indications are that the limit may not have been set appropriately for the entire proposal. The FOS was recovered from safing Sunday evening at 2142Z. There was no anomalous activity in any HST subsystem. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars: Cycle 3 High) 3.2 Complete WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor) 3.3 Complete GHRS/2 4786 (SMOV COSTAR/GHRS Sensitivity MSTM) 3.4 Complete Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Flat Fields Calibration) 3.5 Complete FOS/BL 5444 (A UV Spectral Library of Metal Poor Massive Stars) 3.6 Complete WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey For Blue Straggles in Magellanic Cluster Cores) 3.7 Complete FOS/BL 4908 (SMOV FOS/FGS Fine Alignment) 3.8 Complete FOC/96 5139 (A Search For Low Mass Companions to Nearby Astrometric Binaries) 3.9 Complete WF/PC-2 5099 (Imaging and Spectroscopy of a Complete Sample of Bright Nearby Quasars) 3.10 Complete FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 3 High) 3.11 Complete FOC/96 5141 (FOC Multicolor Imaging of the High Red Shift Galaxies Causing the Mg II) 3.12 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) 3.13 Complete FOS/RD 5320 (A New Size Constraint on Lyman Alpha Clouds: Cycle 4 Medium) 3.14 Complete WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) 3.15 Complete FOC/96 5140 (Observations of the Narrow Line Regions in Nearby Seyfert Galaxies) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: None /DMH -END-
