HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1071 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 040/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 3 High) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the possible binary star VA72 which is located in the Hyades open cluster. The OSS monitored the observation, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed FOC/96 5141 (FOC Multicolor Imaging of the High Red Shift Galaxies Causing the Mg II) The Faint Object Camera will be used to obtain images of galaxy GAL- 034943 using several different filters. This galaxy produces Mg II absorption at Z = 1.47 from the background QSO 0347-3829. The intent is to obtain photometric information on the galaxy's ultraviolet spectral energy distribution. A total of four observations were received and displayed. All of the images were reported to be nominal. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 Was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude greater than +/-30 degrees. These are randomly chosen fields to sample very low luminosity stars in the solar galactic neighborhood, galactic halo objects, and distant galaxies. Five images were received and displayed. They all were reported to be nominal. 1.4 Completed FOS/RD 5320 (A New Size Constraint on Lyman Alpha Clouds: Cycle 4 Medium) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to attempt observations of quasar PKS0254 to look for interstellar absorption lines. The onboard target acquisition failed. The target was not identified by the onboard software. There was absolutely no sign of the target in the science data. An HSTAR was filed. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. Several different filters were used. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FOC/96 5140 (Observations of the Narrow Line Regions in Nearby Seyfert Galaxies) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations at several different wavelengths of Seyfert galaxy MRK-573 which is located near the Cygnus A source. This is to study relations between the radio and optical emissions. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. No anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :9 Successful :8 Tracker #2 failed all three iterations of error box at 039/1432Z. 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: There was no anomalous behavior in any HST subsystem or in any of the SMOV activities. The flight crew astronauts from the STS-61 Servicing Mission were at Goddard Space Flight Center for the day, and stopped by to visit the operations people in the STOCC. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete FOS/RD/S/C 5606 (SMOV FOS/FGS Fine Alignment (Small Apertures)) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: The first attempt to turn on the high voltage for the GHRS (High Resolution Spectrograph) Side One will be made this coming Friday evening. /DMH -END-
