HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1077 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 048/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitors) The WF/PC camera was used to make a series of three routine ultraviolet flat calibration images to monitor the instrument's performance. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. All three exposures were reported to be underexposed. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5104 (Peculiar and Interacting Galaxies: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy UGC-6456. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. Two images were received and displayed in the OSS. They both were reported to look okay. 1.3 Completed FOC/96 5151 (Follow-Up Far-UV Objective Prism Observations of Selected High Redshift Objects) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultraviolet objective prism images of the quasi-stellar object Q1442+102 to determine if the object exhibits intergalactic He II absorption lines. The OSS monitored the observations and assessed the data quality. Four images were received and displayed. All four images were reported to be nominal. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30 degrees. These are randomly chosen fields to sample very low luminosity stars in the solar galactic neighborhood, galactic halo objects, and distant galaxies. Six images were received and displayed. They all were reported to be nominal. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV-WF/PC-2 Flat Field Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth calibration images. Five images were received and displayed. One of the images was reported to be underexposed. 1.6 Completed FOC/96 5154 (FOC Observations of Elliptical Galaxies) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of nearby elliptical galaxy NGC-4649 to determine the luminosity distribution of its core and details about its point-like nucleus. One recentering event was reported to have occurred. The observations were reported to show faint images of the target.. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxies NGC-224-FIE, and NGC-598-FIE to help establish the Hubble constant to an accuracy of better than 10% by measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies. The images were received and displayed. They were reported to show diffuse and stellar targets. 1.8 Completed FOC/96 5139 (A Search for Low_Mass Companions to Nearby Astrometric Binaries) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to to search for faint companions near the astrometric binary star ROSS-248. The FOC images were received and displayed. No anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the galactic plan. The intent is to determine the luminosity function of low mass stars and the mass density in the solar neighborhood. The images were received as scheduled, and one recentering event was reported to have occurred during one of the observations. 1.10 Completed FOC/96 5144 (Study of Optical Associated with Radio Jets and Hot Spots) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of of the active galactic nuclei within Markarian galaxy MKN-348 to learn more about its morphology, ionization state, and the dynamics in the narrow line emission region. Several different filters were used. The images were received, and were reported to look very interesting. 1.11 Completed FOC/96 5377 (UV Observations of Pulsars: Cycle 4 Medium) The Faint object Camera (f/96)was used to make ultraviolet observations of the known X-Ray pulsar PSR0656+14 to see if its ultraviolet flux matches with the model of neutron star atmospheres. The guide star acquisitions were successful, and the observations were completed in fine lock without apparent anomaly. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5372 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, Low Galactic Latitude, C-R Split) The WF/PC-2 was used to make low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. Several different filters were used. The observations were completed as scheduled in fine lock without apparent anomaly. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :13 Successful :13 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: SMOV activities are proceeding as scheduled.
