HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1079 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 052/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Nine Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV-WF/PC-2 Flat Fields Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make visual internal flats, Earth calibration images, and visual flats. 27 images were received and displayed. One exposure was saturated, one was underexposed, and all the others were reported to be okay. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5443 (A Study of Galactic Gas-Phase Abundance Gradients: Cycle 4 High) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of star HD151990 at three different wavelengths using the Echelle gratings to help measure galactic gas-phase abundance. Of particular interest are the ultraviolet interstellar absorption lines due to Si II, Zn II, Cr II, and Fe II. The observations were completed without apparent incident. 11 observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to look okay. 1.3 Completed Five Set of WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC camera was used to make a series of routine dark calibration images to monitor the instrument's performance. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies 3C219.0, 3C249.0, and 3C292.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. A total of six images were received and displayed. They all were reported to look okay. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 4763 (WF/PC-2 QE Throughput Measurements) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet exposures of the UV flux-standard star BD+75D325 to be used for alignment studies. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. A total of 27 images were received and displayed. No anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5355 (The Binary Frequency Among Solar-Type Stars in Young Clusters: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the young star cluster NGC-2024-PO looking for binary stars with separations as low as 0.1 arcseconds to determine the frequency of binaries in this young cluster. 11 observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to look okay. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5161 (Interstellar Carbon and Oxygen: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of star HD36861 to study the abundances, densities, and temperatures carbon and oxygen within 1 KPC of the sun. Two observations were lost due to problems related to the GHRS carrousel reset problems. An HSTAR was written, and the anomaly is being studied. The other observations were reported to be nominal. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5107 (Planetary Nebulae Nuclei Photometry (WC04): Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the nuclei of planetary nebula NGC-7027 trying to detect its central star. This star is expected to be very hot and emitting in the far ultraviolet wavelengths. Three images were received and displayed in the OSS. They were reported to be okay. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5212 (Globular Cluster Formation in Cooling Flow or Interacting Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster NGC-3597 to obtain some insight into the cluster formation mechanism. The baseline guide star acquisition got fine lock, and six observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to look okay. 1.10 Completed GHRS/2 5549 (GHRS Side One Dark Noise Monitor: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal tests for routine monitoring of detector dark noise. There was no carousel motion. A total of sixteen observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to be nominal. 1.11 Completed GHRS/2 5340 (Line Absorption Due to Ejected Nebula of an Old Nova) The High Resolution spectrograph was used to make spectral observations of the old nova shell around star HD174107 (aka V603 Agl, Nova Agl 1918) to provide information on the velocity of the field. Nine observations were received and displayed with no apparent problems. 1.12 Completed FGS 3856 (A Critical Test of the Galactic Escape Velocity at R(Sun): Continuation of 2428 ) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of the high velocity (i.e., high parallax) star G-166-37 to determine its galactic escape velocity. The FGSs were used in the POS mode to measure the target's trigonometric parallax and proper motion. The OSS monitored the observations and assessed the data quality. All of the observations were made in fine lock. No problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 High, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The main purpose of these observations is to study the evolution and structure of galaxies. Five observations were received and displayed in the OSS. One image was reported to show galaxies. The last two observations were reported to have had recentering events occur during the observations. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 18 Successful : 18 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 29 Successful : 29 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :45 Successful :45 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: SMOV activities continue to be performed at a pace that will ensure that SMOV will be completed on or ahead of the SMOV milestone schedule.
