HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1104 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 087/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 CYCLE 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and for contamination. The observations were received and displayed, and they were reported to look okay. No anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5563 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1: UV/OPT STD.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration images of ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582 and monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of the WF/PC-2. A corrective SIP pointing maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. One observation contained lots of fill data due to a science tape recorder track change, but the target was visible. There was a loss of lock that started during a slew to an aperture, and the take data flag did not come up until after the exposure was complete The target was obviously trailed. The data loss in the next observation was due to the track overwrite did not affect the target. The rest of the data was reported to be okay. 1.3 Completed GHRS-1 5592 (GHRS ECH-A Sensitivity Calibration: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Echelle-A) was used to make observations of ultraviolet standard star MU-COLUMBIA to make sensitivity calibration measurements. The baseline guide star acquisition got fine lock, and the shutter opened, the observations were reported to look fine. No anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FGS 5583 (Long Term Stability Monitoring of FGS3) The Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to monitor the optical field angle distortion by making astrometric observations of star OF55-REF which is located in the open cluster M-35. The astrometric observations obtained fine lock and were monitored, and no problems were seen in the telemetry. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5372 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, Low Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used to make low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. Several different filters were used. The observations were completed as scheduled in fine lock without apparent anomaly. 1.6 Complete GHRS/2 5596 (GHRS Side 2 Sensitivity Calibration (1st Order Grating):Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to measure its sensitivity to provide information on temporal variations in throughput since the installation of COSTAR. The first observations were made of the standard test object MU-COLUMBIA. All of the guide star acquisitions achieved fine lock, and subsequent peakup was successful. On a later observation, the baseline guide star acquisition failed to make fine lock, but did make the default course track. The following observations executed with no other problems. These observations were received in the OSS, and are being examined. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5504 (Structure of HERBIG-HARO Jets From New Born Stars: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the jet on star HH47 (Herbig-Haro). The HH jets are related to the star's formation process. Four observations were received and displayed. There were many recenterings, but the data seemed okay. The exposures were 45 minutes long, and were full of cosmic ray hits. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey For Blue Stragglers in Magellanic Cluster Cores) The WF/PC-2 was used to make short exposure snapshot images of the blue straggler stars located in populous cluster NGC-2157. A populous cluster is the Magellanic Cloud equivalent of a galactic globular cluster. The observations were made with two different color filters. The intent is to find out if blue straggler stars exist within this cluster. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5565 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4: Photometric Calibration: Fields) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration images by taking images of the large globular cluster Omega Centauri (aka, NGC-5139) to help determine astrometric and optical stability of the WF/PC-2. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. No anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed GHRS/2 5600 (GHRS Side 2 Wavelength Monitor (1ST Order Grating): Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make wavelength calibration observations of its first order gratings using the internal calibration lamp. The HRS internals took place entirely during LOS, and could not be monitored in real-time. 1.11 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies 3C268.4 and 3C263.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The observations were completed in fine lock. No anomalies were noted. The observations of the second galaxy showed only a very faint object near the center of PC1 as targeted. The object was expected to be faint. 1.12 Completed FOC/96 5517 (FOC Absolute Sensitivity: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make absolute sensitivity measurements using standard ultraviolet target star HZ4. The decision observation was received in real time and showed a substantially off-centered star. A corrective SIP Maneuver was successfully up linked to the spacecraft. The guide star reacquisition were successful and the observations proceeded without apparent anomaly. The observations were reported to be okay. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The main purpose of these observations is to study the evolution and structure of galaxies. The guide star acquisitions and reacquisitions were successful, and subsequent observations proceeded without apparent anomaly. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5109 (A Deep Survey at High Galactic Latitudes (WC06): Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make long exposures of a high galactic latitude field to learn more about the number and morphology of distant galaxies and the luminosity function of stars in our galaxy. The observations were received and displayed. They showed many faint fuzzy objects. 1.15 Completed GHRS/1 5277 (GHRS Side 1 Spectral Lamp Tests: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make internal spectral lamp wavelength calibrations. The data analysis will provide dispersion constants, carrousel and Y-deflection functions, and spectral resolving power for Side 1. The GHRS internals appeared to complete without apparent anomaly. The observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to be okay. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 16 Successful : 16 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 28 Successful : 28 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :36 Successful :36 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: For the weekend period, each HST subsystem reported essentially trouble-free operations. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium_Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) 3.2 Complete WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor) 3.3 Complete Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) 3.4 Complete FGS 4884 (High Speed Astrometry: A Search for Planetary Companions to Low Mass Stars) 3.5 Complete WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) 3.6 Complete WF/PC-2 5624 (Cycle 4 DD: HST Observations of Comet Shoemaker-Levy (1993E) For March) 3.7 Complete WF/PC-2 5612 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Decontamination) 3.8 Complete WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) 3.9 Complete FOC/96 5171 (Imaging and Spectroscopy of the Low Redshift BALQSO PG1700+518) 3.10 Complete WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) 3.11 Complete WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) 3.12 Complete WF/PC-2 5504 (Structure of HERIG-HERO Jets From Newborn Stars: Cycle 4 High) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
