HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DALY REPORT #1105 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 088/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium_Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. Several different filters were used. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. One observation was received and displayed. It was reported to show stellar and galactic objects. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 camera was used to make a series of routine dark calibration images to monitor the instrument's performance. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No anomalies were noted, and the image was reported to look okay. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. All of the data was received in the OSS and was reported to look okay. 1.4 Completed FGS 4884 (High Speed Astrometry: A Search for Planetary Companions to Low Mass Stars) The FGSs were used to make observations of Barnard's star to look for astrometric companions (i.e., a Jupiter-sized companion). The guide star acquisition achieved fine lock, but that was followed by a 95 minute LOS. The OSS was not able to monitor the astrometry during this period. The observations will be analyzed later. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the galactic plane. The intent is to determine the luminosity function of low mass stars and the mass density in the solar neighborhood. All of the observation were made in fine lock. The observations were received, and reported to look okay. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5624 (Cycle 4 DD: HST Observations of Comet Shoemaker-Levy (1993E) For March) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Comet Shoemaker-Levy (1993E). The main purpose of these observations is to refine the size of the various nuclei that make up this comet. The first two images were reported to look fine. The third observations was received in the OSS, but it was in a garbled form. A re-play from the science tape recorder is planned. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5612 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to perform decontamination operations. Observations of standard A+81D266, and K-Spot observations were also taken. The first observation was completed without incident. A subsequent observation was received and was reported to be garbled. This occurred at the same time as the garbled data transmission on proposal 5624 (See Item 1.6). A re-play of the data from the science tape recorder is planned for later today. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and for contamination. The observations were received, but were in a garbled form. A retransimission of the data from the science tape recorder is scheduled for later today. 1.9 Completed FOC/96 5171 (Imaging and Spectroscopy of the Low Redshift BALQSO PG1700+518) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the absorbing regions in the low redshift BAL quasar PG1700+518 to learn more about its physics and morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. The data remains on the science tape recorder, and will be analyzed later. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30 degrees. These are randomly chosen fields to sample very low luminosity stars in the solar galactic neighborhood, galactic halo objects, and distant galaxies. The images were received and displayed, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C255.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. The OSS monitored the observations, and the data quality was assessed. No anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5504 (Structure of HERBIG-HARO Jets From Newborn Stars: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the jet on star HH47 (Herbig-Haro). The HH jets are related to the star's formation process. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :15 Successful :15 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: HST operations experienced another quiet twenty-four hours as no anomalous activity was reported. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete WF/PC-2 5565 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4: Photometric Calibration Monitor: Fields) 3.2 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) 3.3 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor) 3.4 Complete WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) 3.5 Complete WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earth Flats, Large Set) 3.6 Complete FOC/BL/RD 5626 (SMOV FOS Plate Scale (Revisited - Replaces 5617)) 3.7 Complete WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
