HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1109 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 094/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and for contamination. A total of ten images were taken. Observation number eight could not be evaluated because of garbled data. Otherwise the observations were satisfactory. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5563 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1: UV/OPT STD.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration images of ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582 and monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of the WF/PC-2. A pointing correction was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. The observations were reported to be satisfactory. 1.3 Completed GHRS/1 5540 (GHRS ECH-A Aperture Offset: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) used to make calibration observations fo the star Mu-Columbia to measure the wavelength offset in the Large Science Aperture (LSA), relative to the wave length for the Small Science Aperture (SSA)observations. The onboard target acquisition was successful. The observations were received and displayed. There were some recenterings reported. Otherwise, the observations were reported to be nominal. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/1 5541 (GHRS Side 1 Dark Noise Monitor: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make routine detector dark noise calibration observations. These were internal tests and did not require any special pointing of the telescope. 16 observations were received and displayed. They were reported to be nominal. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to the M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy UGC-5889 which itself is located in the M-96 galaxy cluster. This is to help determine the distance to this galactic group, and to improve the determination of the Hubble constant. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5090 (Large Area Multicolor Survey: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep exposure images of field #1418 as part of a large area, high galactic latitude, multicolor sky survey to learn more about the distribution of galaxies, their morphology, distribution in magnitude and redshift, and evolution of galactic luminosity, function, and colors. Five observations were received and displayed. There were some recenterings reported. 1.7 Completed GHRS/1/2 5297 (First Spectra of O Type Stars in R136A) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used to make spectra of several stars in the compact cluster R136A1 in 30 Doradus. The onboard target acquisition appeared to be successful, but the confirmation images were very poor. It was not clear that the targets were adequately centered. The spectrum was reported to look good. Subsequent observations reported to be nominal. Some recentering events were reported. 1.8 Completed GHRS/1 5277 (GHRS Side 1 Spectral Lamp Tests: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make internal spectral lamp wavelength calibrations. The data analysis will provide dispersion constants, carrousel and Y-deflection functions, and spectral resolving power for Side 1. The GHRS internals appeared to complete without apparent anomaly. Six observations were received and displayed. They all were reported to be satisfactory. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5559 (WF/PC-2 Astrometric Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster NGC-1850 in order to measure plate scales and distortion across the chips. 24 observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They all were reported to be okay, except for some recenterings. 1.10 Completed GHRS/2 5625 (GHRS Side 2 Carrousel Functional Test: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to repeat the carrousel functional test which ran during OV to help determine if there has been any change in the carrousel response. One observations was received in the OSS, and it was reported to be nominal. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5516 (A WF/PC-2 Snapshot of R136A) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the star cluster R136A which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These images will be compared to the original WF/PC-1 ERO images obtained in 1990. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale. Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-5457-FL to help establish the Hubble constant to an accuracy of better than 10% by measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this galaxy. The observations were monitored by the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 22 Successful : 22 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :26 Successful :26 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: On Friday, April 1, 1994, it was notied that on day 081 at approximately 1738Z solar array section 4, located on the minus solar array, experienced an instantaneous current loss of 8 amps. A tiger team has been formed and the problem has been monitored. Although there are several possible scenarios which could explain the occurrence, a specific cause has not yet been determined. The tiger team is meeting again this morning. The problem is being monitored. No other HST subsystem anomalies were reported this weekend. All SMOV activities, with the exception of the repeat of the FOS ERO to correct a target acquisition/pointing problem, have now been completed. This final activity will be scheduled as soon as possible within STScI scheduling guidelines. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete GHRS/2 5357 (Cepheid Masses: Cycle 4 High) 3.2 Complete FOS/BL 5530 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture) 3.3 Complete Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5561 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 2: Flats) 3.4 Complete Two Sets WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots fo 3CR Radio Galaxies) 3.5 Complete WF/PC-2 5343 (WFC Imaging of Nearby Bright Quasars) 3.6 Complete WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) 3.7 Complete FOC/96 5140 (Observations of the Narrow Line Regions in Nearby Seyfert Galaxies) 3.8 Complete WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) 3.9 Complete WF/PC-2 5612 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Decontamination) 3.10 Complete WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to the M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) 3.11 Complete GHRS/2 5506 (The Deuterium Abundance in Moderate Redshift QSO Systems) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
