HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1131 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 124/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium_Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium: High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made an observation of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observation was taken in parallel with other prime science observations, and it was received and displayed. No anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxies NGC-5457-FL, and NGC-4321 to help establish the Hubble constant to an accuracy of better than 10% by measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies. The first image was received and displayed, and it was reported to be okay, except for some recentering. The second observation still remains on the Science Tape Recorder #3, and will be analyzed later. No anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed GHRS/2 5591 (GHRS Side 2 "Locate= Extended" Test: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to test new software that will allow the use of more than the two standard diodes during the X balancing in the locate phase of the target acquisition. The observations were received and examined. The target was poorly centered, or absent, in all of the images. Further analysis is needed to determine the success of these observations. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C270.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. Two images were received and displayed. Both were reported to look okay. 1.5 Completed FOS/BL 5579 (Cycle 4 Test: To Determine FOS Polarimetry Mode) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make internal calibration observations of its polarization capabilities. Six observations were executed as scheduled. They all were received and displayed. No anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5454 (Ellipticals with Kinematically Distinct Cores: cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make an observation of the small elliptical galaxy NGC-4365 which contains a massive core which is kinematically distinct from the rest of the galaxy. The observation was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. The image was reported to look fine. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5238 (Asteroids (WC16): Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the asteroid 18-MELPOME. The observations were executed as scheduled, and the science data remains on Science Tape Recorder #3. It will be analyzed later. No anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-4818. The observations were executed as scheduled, and the science data remains on Science Tape Recorder #3. It will be analyzed later. No anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Large Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth flat calibration images using different filters in order to construct high quality flat fields of the OTA illumination pattern. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to the M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy NGC-3368 which itself is located in the M-96 galaxy cluster. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 1070 (High Resolution Imaging of Radio Galaxies at Large Redshifts) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep images of radio galaxy 3C226. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :14 Successful :14 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: During the past twenty-four hours, HST engineers reported that there was no anomalous behavior in any onboard subsystem. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshot Survey of 3CR Radio Galaxies) 3.2 Complete FGS 5054 (High Speed Astrometry: A Search for Planetary Companions to Low Mass Stars) 3.3 Complete WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3.
