HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1132 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 125/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshot Survey of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C180.0 and 3C452.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. The first observations was received and displayed, and it was reported to be nominal. The second observations was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed FGS 5054 (High Speed Astrometry: A Search for Planetary Companions to Low Mass Stars) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make observations of the position of the star Proxima Centauri to determine the presence of a Jupiter sized planet in orbit about the target star. Three observations occurred during LOS. Of the seven that occurred during AOS, one failed to find the target. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3. Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain a 30-minute-long, dark exposure to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The image was received and displayed in the OSS. It was reported to be nominal. 1.4 Completed GHRS/1 5543 (GHRS Side 1 Line Spread Function: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to try and make observations of standard star HD141556. The base line guide star acquisition failed completely. Therefore, the onboard target acquisition did not occur. (See Section 2.1) 1.5 Completed FOC/96 5521 (FOC Geometric Correction and Plate Scale: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera was used to attempt to make observations of globular cluster 47 Tucanae (aka, NGC-104) to help determine the post-COSTAR plate scale calibration. However, the observations did not executed, because of a failed guide star acquisition. (See Section 2.1) 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude, CR-SPLIT) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to attempt to make make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The four scheduled observations failed because of a failed guide star acquisition. The shutter toggled, but did not remain open for the planned duration of the exposure. (See Section 2.1) 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey for Blue Stragglers in Magellanic Cluster Cores) The WF/PC-2 was used to make short exposure snapshot images of the blue straggler stars located in populous clusters NGC-2164. The observations were executed as scheduled. The observations still remain on Science Tape Recorder #1, and will be analyzed alter. No anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FOS/RD 5634 (Velocity Dispersion in Nucleus of M-87 (Repeat): Cycle 4 FOS ERO) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to map the stellar velocity dispersion and rotation in the nucleus of M-87 (aka, NGC-4486). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 4 Acquisitions failed at 124/1636Z and 2045Z Scheduled Reacquisitions : 9 Successful : 4 Reacquisitions failed at 124/1811Z, 2011Z, 2348Z, 125/0123Z, and 0301Z. Two separate events appears to have occurred. The first was a possible attitude error caused by the saving of a wrong V1 bias which effected an acquisition around 124/1636Z. The second event was caused by the selection of a guide star which was possibly too dim at 124/2040Z. Both of these events had cascading effects on other observations. The problems are currently under investigation. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :13 Successful :12 Loss of Lock at 124/1546Z 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: Onboard HST subsystems experienced no anomalous behavior in the last twenty-four hours. However, as detailed above, guide star acquisition, FHST update, and loss of lock problems affected both science and astrometry observations. (See Section 2.1) 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete GHRS/2 5601 (GHRS ECH-A Wavelength Monitor: Cycle 4) 3.2 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale, Cycle 4 High) 3.3 Complete WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) 3.4 Complete FOC/96 5521 (FOC Geometric Correction and Plate Scale: Cycle 4) 3.5 Complete WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude; CR-SPILT) 3.6 Complete WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
