HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1133 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 126/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed GHRS/2 5601 (GHRS ECH-A Wavelength Monitor: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make Echelle-B spectral calibration observations using lamp #2. A total of 24 observations were received and displayed. They were reported to look okay. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale, Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxies NGC-5457-FL, and NGC-4321 to help establish the Hubble constant to an accuracy of better than 10% by measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies. The first set of three observations were received and displayed, and they were reported to look okay. The second set was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C399.1 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. The baseline guide star acquisition and the subsequent reacquisitions were reported to be okay. Three observations were received and displayed. The first two had some recenterings, but the images were reported to be okay. The third observations was reported to be okay. 1.4 Completed FOC/96 5521 (FOC Geometric Correction and Plate Scale: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to attempt to observe globular cluster 47 Tucanae (aka,NGC-104). The observations did not execute, because of a failed guide star acquisition. The Take Data Flag (TDF) was down and the shutter never opened for these exposures. (See Sections 2.1, and 2.4) 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude; CR-SPILT) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to attempt to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. All observations were reported to have failed because of a guide star acquisition failure. (See Sections 2.1, and 2.4) 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 3 Successful : 2 Acquisitions failed at 125/2044Z. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 3 Reacquisitions failed at 125/1811Z, 2011Z, 2348Z, 126/0131, 0308, 0621, and 0758Z. (See Sections 1.4, 1.5, and 2.4 for comments of the acquisition and reacquisition failures.) 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :13 Successful :13 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: All HST onboard subsystems performed nominally throughout the operational day. As indicated above, the acquisition and re-acquisition problems experienced yesterday are continuing. Since the observatory is performing many of the same proposals and is operating at the same attitude, this is not surprising. The source of the problem has been attributed to a poor quality guide star. 3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD: 3.1 Complete WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) 3.2 Complete Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) 3.3 Complete Two Sets of FOS/BL 5537 (Cycle 4 Superflat Spectral Flat Fields) 3.4 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 3: Darks) 3.5 Complete FGS 5338 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference Frame, NEWHIP-D) 3.6 Complete Three Set of WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude, CR-SPLIT) 3.7 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Large Set) 3.8 Complete FOC/96 5518 (FOC Point Source Non-Linearity: Cycle 4) 3.9 Complete FOC/96 5154 (FOC Observations of Elliptical Galaxies.) 3.10 Complete WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) 3.11 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5454 (Ellipticals With Kinematically Distinct Cores: Cycle 4 Medium) 3.12 Complete FGS 5333 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference Frame: BR12-23, Part 2) 3.13 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to the M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) 3.14 Complete WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) 3.15 Complete GHRS/2 5443 (A Study of Galactic Gas-Phase Abundance Gradients: Cycle 4 High) 3.16 Complete FOS/RD 5579 (Cycle 4 Test: To Determine FOS Polarimetry Mode) 3.17 Complete WF/PC-2 5366 (The Chronology of the Galactic Halo and Disk) 4.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
