HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1134 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 129/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and for contamination. The WF/PC-2 internal observations were produced with no apparent difficulty. However, there was a track change on Science Tape Recorder #3 during the read-out of a bias frame. Part of the image was reported to be missing. No other anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies 3C267.0, 3C153.0, 3C326.1, and 3C348.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The first two observations were received and displayed. They were reported to be okay. The third observation had major parts of the observation missing, and the OSS has requested an LOR playback. The fourth observations still remains on the science tape recorder, and will be analyzed later. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 5537 (Cycle 4 Superflat Spectral Flat Fields) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make spectra superflat calibrations observation by using the relatively featureless ultraviolet standard star BD+28D4211. A total of ten observations were received and displayed. Except for recenterings, they were reported to be nominal. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of 30-minute dark exposures to calibrate the instrument. The first observations was received and displayed, and no anomalies were noted. The second observation still remains on the Science Tape recorder, and will be analyzed later. 1.5 Completed FGS 5338 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference Frame, NEWHIP-D) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the extra-galactic object NEWEGOD-57. Ten of the eleven observations were observed in real-time. There were no problems seen with the telemetry. 1.6 Completed Three Set of WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude, CR-SPLIT) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The first two sets were received and displayed, no anomalies were noted. The third set was reported to have had some recenterings, but was reported to look nominal. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Large Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earthflat calibration images using different filters in order to construct high quality flat fields of the OTA illumination pattern. In the first set of observations, one image was reported to be saturated, and the other was underexposed. The second set of observations still remains on the Science Tape Recorder #3, and will be analyzed later. 1.8 Completed FOC/96 5518 (FOC Point Source Non-Linearity: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to observe stars in globular cluster NGC-5139 (aka, Omega Centauri). The first observation was successfully received and displayed in real-time. A corrective pointing maneuver was successfully calculated, and uplinked to the spacecraft. The subsequent observations received and displayed. Many of the star images were reported to be saturated. Some of the images were reported to look "strange". Some of the 512X512 zoom images were also reported to look "peculiar". 1.9 Completed FOC/96 5154 (FOC Observations of Elliptical Galaxies.) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of nearby elliptical galaxy NGC-5090 to determine the luminosity distribution of its core and details about its point-like nucleus. The images were received in the OSS, and they were reported to be okay. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The images were received and examined as scheduled, and they were reported to look okay. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5454 (Ellipticals With Kinematically Distinct Cores: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the small elliptical galaxies NGC-3608, NGC-4278, and NGC-4494 which contains massive cores which is kinematically distinct from the rest of the galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, received by Science Tape Recorder playback. No anomalies were noted, except for some recenterings. 1.12 Completed FGS 5333 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference Frame: BR12-23, Part 2) The FGSs were used to obtain astrometric observations on stars 1226+023IN, and INCA221_83 whose apparent positions lie near extragalactic objects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been reported. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to the M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy UGC-5889 which itself is located in the M-96 galaxy cluster. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-3521. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been reported. 1.15 Completed GHRS/2 5443 (A Study of Galactic Gas-Phase Abundance Gradients: Cycle 4 High) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of star HD178478 using the Echelle gratings to help measure galactic gas-phase abundance. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed FOS/RD 5579 (Cycle 4 Test: To Determine FOS Polarimetry Mode) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make internal wavelength calibration observations of its polarization capabilities.
