HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1184 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 201/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two sets of WF/PC-2 5662 (Cycle 4 DD HST Observations of Comet Shoemaker-Levy (1993E) For July 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the comet Shoemaker-Levy/9 (Object 11) to help refine the size estimates of the various components of the comet train. Two observations were executed as scheduled. Both images were received and displayed, and they reported to be nominal. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of galaxies G1307-1608 and IR1331-231. Two observations were executed as scheduled, and both observations were reported to be nominal. 1.3 Completed Five Sets of GHRS/1, and WF/PC-2 5642 (Observations of the Impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy (1993E) and Jupiter) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) and the WF/PC-2 were used to make observations to support the Jupiter/ Shoemaker-Levy impact events. Several dark calibration images were also taken. Thirty nine observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They all were reported to look okay. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxies NGC-3666 and NGC-7462. Two observations of the first galaxy were displayed, and they were reported to be nominal. Observations of the second galaxy were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-7331 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy. Two images were received and displayed. They both were reported to be nominal. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5439 (The Calibration of the White Dwarf Distance Scale for Globular Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make color and magnitude measurements of white dwarf star WD2341+322 which is located in globular cluster NGC-6752. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5454 (Ellipticals with Kinematically Distinct Cores: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the small elliptical galaxy NGC-1439 which contains a massive core which is kinematically distinct from the rest of the galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FGS 5657 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 4 High) The FGSs (TRANS-Mode) were used to make astrometric observations of star VA376 located in the Hyades cluster in an attempt to find a close binary. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5427 (Calibration of Nearby Galaxy Type IA Supernovae as Standard Candles) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of nearby galaxy NGC-4496-A-F as part of an effort to find Cepheids in this galaxy which have produced a Type I supernova. The observations were executed as scheduled, and the data remains on Science Tape Recorder #3. It will be analyzed later. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :16 Successful :16 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: The HST experienced trouble-free operations during the last twenty-four hours. The comet Shoemaker-Levy/planet Jupiter collisions continued with results being released throughout the day. The collisions will occur periodically until early Friday morning. 3.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
