HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1185 PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST Daily Status Report as of 202/1200Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5642 (Observations of the Impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy(1993E) and Jupiter) The WF/PC-2 made observations to support the Jupiter/Shoemaker-Levy event. Twenty one observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They all were reported to be nominal. Several images were released during the this morning's (Thursday, July 21, 1993) press conference. The results were very impressive. 1.2 Completed GHRS/2 5625 (GHRS Side 2 Carrousel Functional Test: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to repeat the carrousel functional test which run during OV to help determine if there has been any change in the carrousel response. A dark calibration image was also taken. One observations was received in the OSS, and it was reported to be okay. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5662 (Cycle 4 DD HST Observations of Comet Shoemaker-Levy (1993E) For July 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the comet Shoemaker-Levy/9 (Object 5) to help refine the size estimates of the various components of the comet train and looking for possible object break-ups. The observations were executed as scheduled, and four images were received and displayed in the OSS. All four images were reported to be okay. One of the images was displayed at the morning press conference. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a snapshot observation of the nearby active galactic nuclei of ESO0509-G64. The observation was executed as scheduled, and it was displayed in the OSS. However, no target was visible in the image. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-4596. The observations were executed as scheduled, and two image were received and displayed. They both were reported to be nominal. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C437.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Large Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth flat calibration images using different filters in order to construct high quality flat fields of the OTA illumination pattern. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5450 (Host Galaxies and Cluster Environments of Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Quasar QSO-123304 to study the properties of its host galaxy and surrounding environment. The observations were executed as scheduled. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :13 Successful :13 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: Each HST onboard subsystem performed flawlessly during the previous operational day. The comet Shoemaker-Levy/planet Jupiter collisions continue to produce spectacular results which have been released throughout the day at informative press briefings. These collisions will continue to occur periodically until early tomorrow morning. 3.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
