HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1236 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 276/0000Z. 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOC/96 5526 (UV Throughput Monitoring - Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make calibration observations of ultraviolet standard star BPM16274, to monitor the ultraviolet throughput of the HST-FOC. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (Medium Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium High Galactic Latitude - CR-Split) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5430 (Imaging the UV Stars in M32 and NGC 205: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of the galaxies NGC-221 (M32) and NGC-205, which are satellite galaxies of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). The images will be used to search for UV bright stars, the brightest of which have a S/N of 10-50. In turn, the images will determine the colors and luminosities of the stars helping to understand the source of UV fluxes in galaxies. A total of four recentering events were reported. Two recentering events on object NGC-221 were reported for a total of nine seconds, and two recentering events on object NGC-205 were reported for a total of six seconds 1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5571 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Earth Flats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 1: Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 2: Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of MARK917, MARK918, and UGC12138 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed FOS/RD 5530 (Location of Spectra and Aperture) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make Y-base maps of the FOS detectors using internal lamps. The purpose is to determine the location of the spectra on the diodes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed FOC/96 5341 (High Resolution Imaging of Saturn's UV Aurora: Cycle 4 Medium) The FOC/f96 was used to observe Saturn in the UV to look for auroral emission at the north pole. Images were obtained over one complete rotation of the planet (eight HST orbits) so that the brightness, morphology, and temporal variations of the aurora could be studied, a phenomenon already noticed by the Voyager UVS. The observations completed without incident. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5464 (A Study of the AGB in Local Group Bulge Populations) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the stellar bulge in galaxy NGC-224-1 to make a survey of its stellar population. The observations were completed as expected, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5570 (Cycle 4 Calibrations: Earth Flats, Large Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth flat calibration images using different filters in order to construct high quality flat fields of the OTA illumination pattern. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions :9 Successful :9 Scheduled Reacquisitions :33 Successful :33 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled :19 Successful :19 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: Throughout the entire three-day weekend period there were no significant problems in any HST subsystem. 3.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
