HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1246 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 291/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of HEAO0448-0 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C63.0, 3C13.3, and 3C28.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5508 (Tracking Features in Titan's Lower Atmosphere and on Its Surface) The WF/PC-2 obtained images of Saturn's moon Titan to look for cloud features, and possibly surface features. The observations completed with no reported errors. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5343 (Imaging of Nearby Bright Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the bright quasar PHL909. The goal is to study the morphology of this galaxy, and to see how it differs from non-QSO galaxies. They also will be looking for the relationship between the properties of the host galaxy and the luminosity of the quasar. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 2 - Flats Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed HRS/2 5468 (The Mass of the White Dwarf of V471 Tauri: Cycle 4 Medium) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to observe the white dwarf in the eclipsing binary system, V471 Tau. The observations were made when the target was at positions of greatest elongations on each side of the companion star. The target's velocity curve was found from the strong Lyman Alpha absorption, and will be used to calculate the mass. A guide star recentering event was reported lasting for a total of four seconds. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Earth Flats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC925 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy. Two guide star recentering events were reported lasting for a total of six seconds. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 14 Successful : 14 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: No significant problems occurred aboard the HST during this operational day. However, SSA command capability was lost to the HST for three TDRSS events due to a problem with the SSA2 transmitter power supply at WSGT. Since a critical load had to be uplinked during the outage, a TDRS-Spare service was requested and successfully used. The WSGT problem has since been corrected. 3.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
