HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1252 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 299/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 5588 (FOS Prism Snapshot Survey) The Faint Object Spectrograph is currently in Safe Mode, and no observations were executed. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5419 (A Search for Very Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-4203, which is known to have ultraviolet bright, low-luminosity, active galactic nuclei. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of WAS45 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Four Sets of FOS/BL 5444 (A UV Spectral Library of Metal- Poor Massive Stars) The Faint Object Spectrograph is currently in Safe Mode, and no observations were executed. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 2: Flats Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a visual flats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed COSTAR/FOC 5762 (FOC Point Spread Function Monitoring: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make an image of an ultraviolet standard star (BPM16274) in order to monitor the point-spread function of the HST-COSTAR-FOC channel. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 High, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed HRS/2 5468 (The Mass of the White Dwarf of V471 Tauri: Cycle 4 Medium) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to observe the white dwarf in the eclipsing binary system, V471 Tau. The observations were made when the target was at position of greatest elongation on the side of the companion star. The target's velocity curve will be found from the strong Lyman Alpha absorption, and will be used to calculate the mass. Two recentering events were reported to have lasted for a total of six seconds. No other anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5343 (WFC Imaging of Nearby Bright Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the bright quasar NAB0205+05 and its host galaxy. The goal is to study the morphology of this galaxy, and to see how it differs from non-QSO galaxies. They also will be looking for the relationship between the properties of the host galaxy and the luminosity of the quasar. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5353 (Low-Mass Binaries in the Hyades: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the low-mass, late M-Class dwarf star RHY281 which is located in the Hyades cluster. Some of the companion stars may be brown dwarfs. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5563 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1: UV /OPT STD.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration images of ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582 and monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of the WF/PC-2. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: Battery #6 capacity test begins today (10/26/94) and will complete by mid-afternoon tomorrow. 3.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: Preliminary analysis of the FOS safing of the Blue Side this past Monday indicates a possible transient which corrupted the FOS microprocessor's memory, overloading the microprocessor. In conjunction with the STScI and the FOS developers at UCSD, a recovery plan has been developed which presents zero risk to the instrument hardware. Recovery from safemode today will permit a Red Side observation to execute, verifying normal Red Side operations. If successful, Red Side observations will continue to be scheduled. Further FOS observations in the week's SMS will be inhibited. On 10/31/94, the Blue Side will execute without High Voltage being turned on. Assuming success, the next Blue Side observation with High Voltage turn-on will be executed. If an anomaly occurs, Blue Side activities will be removed from future SMSs while analysis activities proceed. 4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
