HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1260 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 311/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy NGC-3368 which itself is located in the M-96 galaxy cluster. This is to help determine the distance to this galactic group, and to improve the determination of the Hubble constant. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of galaxies NGC-3810 and NGC-1003 to provide statistics on the nuclear cups, stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of ESO362-G18 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/RD 5631 (A New Size Constraint on Lyman Alpha Clouds) The FOS (Red Side) was utilized to view PKS0254-33 to observe a pair of quasars separated by about one arcsecond, and one member of a second pair, with the expectation that constraints can be put on the scale of the absorbers which produce spectral lines in the Lyman Alpha forest. The baseline guide star acquisition for this observation failed: this observations was made in coarse track instead of fine lock. No other anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The baseline guide star acquisition for this observation failed: this observation was made in coarse track instead of fine lock. No other anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5470 (WF/PC-2 Imaging of the Protogalaxy Candidate B2 0902+34) The Planetary Camera will be used to obtain images of the protogalaxy candidate B2 0902+34, which is one of the most distant known galaxies (Z=3.395). It is hoped to learn more about the distribution of the star forming regions and emission line gas on smaller scales than was possible with previous ground based observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5233 (Stellar Populations and Clusters in Elliptical Galaxies (WC08)) The WF/PC-2 was sued to make deep observations of elliptical galaxy NGC-4881 to study its stellar population. The observations were complete as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed FOS/BL 5530 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make Y-base maps of the FOS detectors using internal lamps. The purpose is to determine the location of the spectra on the diodes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. See Operations Notes for the resumption of the FOS Blues Side opertations. 1.11 Completed FGS 5657 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 4 High) The FGSs (TRANS-Mode) were used to make astrometric observations of star VA709 located in the Hyades cluster in an attempt to find a close binary. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the galactic plane. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed FOS/RD/S/C 5528 (FOS Cycle 4: Focus, X-Patch, Y-Patch) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make both a dark and wavelength calibration observations. No external sources were used. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5401 (Luminosities and Morphologies of a Complete 3CR Sample of Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of radio galaxy GSC0817-02, which has a Z near 1.0, and also is a quasar. These observations will be used to determine and compare luminosities, and morphologies in the optical and infrared. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed GHRS/2 5547 (GHRS Side 2 Detector Calibrations: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to make dark, and internal flat calibration images to help check the stability of the detectors. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 5511 (Detailed Study of 4C41.17, the Most Distant Galaxy: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make early acquisition images the galaxy 4C41.17, which is the most distant known galaxy. This is to try to locate the knots which will be later observed with the FOS. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 5504 (Structure of HERBIG-HARO Jets From New Born Stars: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the jet on star HH111 (Herbig-Haro). The HH jets are related to the star's formation process. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5419 (A Search for Very Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-3607, which is known to have ultraviolet bright, low-luminosity, active galactic nuclei. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 13 Successful : 13 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 6 Successful : 6 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: 2.4.1 The FOS high voltage turn-on was successfully accomplished on Saturday at approximately 1400Z, using the Blue side. This was the first use of the Blue Side with high voltage since last week's safing. 2.4.2 The first image of a stellar source with the COSTAR corrections for the f/48 optical relay of the FOC was taken on 10/31. The image was of the spiral galaxy NGC 1068. It contained stellar images that are optically corrected and in good focus. The 4.5 hour test was run without the normal 75 minute warmup time. The position of the long spectrographic slit was found. This was the first use of the f/48 detector in almost a year. Previous turnons since January 1993 had shown a worsening of the high background levels attributed to a partial breakdown in one of the camera's high voltage intensifier stages. In December, 1993, the background count rate was unacceptably high after 3 hours of use. Contrary to previous tests, this time the background was high at first and decreased markedly with time. A plan for future testing and use of the f/48 camera will be developed in the coming weeks. 2.4.3 FSW installation 9.4 Phase 1 consisting of the #10 Write Protect command modification and the new "H" format telemetry with related PDB 42.A changes were installed on 11/4/94. (308/1450Z to 308/2200Z). Two HSTARs related to the new telemtery format were written.
