HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1297 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 003/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. All except the last observation were completed as scheduled. For that observation all data was lost when operations misconfigured the STR. See 2.3 for further details. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. Due to a tape recorder track change, some data was lost in group 4. No other anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOS/RD 5512 (Cores of Early Type Galaxies: Part II) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to obtain rotational profiles and velocity dispersions around the core of galaxy NGC-3115-NU. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5764 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Flats - Repeat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal flat calibration images using the VIS lamp and internal sources. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed GHRS/2 5487 (Chemical and Physical Processes in Dense Interstellar Clouds: Cycle 4 Medium) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make observations of standard star HD24534 (aka, X-Per) to study the chemical and physical processes in dense interstellar clouds which lie along the line of sight to the star. The HST underwent a recentering event for three seconds. No other anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5351 (Properties of Intermediate Redshift Galactic Disks Causing Damped Lyman-Alpha) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations to study the diffuse material at intermediate redshifts that is identified by absorbing Lyman-Alpha spectrum from quasar PKS1229-02. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD 5588 (FOS Prism Snapshot Survey) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make a Prism observation of quasi-stellar object PKS1229-02 to study its optical to ultraviolet continuum shape. The observation was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-3351 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5485 (Long Period Variables of M81) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the long period variables in galaxy M-81 (aka, NGC-3031) to compare to those already studied in our galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds to learn how much of a role is played by the environment in which these stars form. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed FGS 5334 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference Frame: BR0-11, Part 1) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to to make astrometric observations of several stars (i.e., 640-REF, 0716+714IN, 641-REF, 642-REF, INCA221-41, and 642-REF) to help tie the HIPPARCOS and extragalactic reference frames together. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 High, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C119.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5202 (The Disk of Beta Pictoris) The WF/PC-2 was used to observe Beta Pictoris (aka HD39060) to image the disk. The image will be saturated, but blooming is expected to be limited to the region within one arcsecond of the center, in the perpendicular direction. Investigators are expected to learn about the radial profile, albedo and temperature of the disk. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of galaxy 0329-3022 to provide statistics on the nuclear cusps, stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed FOS/RD 5664 (Quasar Absorption Line Survey: Cycle 4 High) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make spectrographic observations of quasi-stellar object PKS1302-10 to look for absorption lines due to gas in the intergalactic medium and galactic halos. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy UGC-5889 which itself is located in the M-96 galaxy cluster. This is to help determine the distance to this galactic group, and to improve the determination of the Hubble constant. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed FOS/BL 5658 (White Dwarf Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make absolute sensitivity calibrations of the detectors using standard white dwarf star GD153. The HST experienced a recentering event for two seconds. No other anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 5493 (Synoptic Monitoring of Seasonal Phenomena on Mars: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Mars at selected seasons, looking for periodic changes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 5354 (Imaging in the Crab Nebula) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of NGC-1952-BR (aka, M-1, the Crab Nebula) to study ionization structure and to look for hot spots. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.22 Completed WF/PC-2 5474 (The Search for Superplanets Around Weak T-Tauri Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations to weak T-Tauri class star HBC347 (i.e., pre-main sequence star) to search for possible planets. The observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 5085 (Turbulence in H II Regions) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the small scale turbulent H II regions located in NGC-1976-9 (aka, the Orion Nebula) using several different line and continuum filters. Ten adjacent fields of view were images. No anomalies were noted. 1.24 Completed WF/PC-2 5637 (Stellar Populations in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the dwarf Spheroidal galaxy CARINA-064 to study its stellar population. Observations will be made using two different filters. HR diagrams will be constructed and the ages, metallicities, and luminosity functions will be found. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies have been reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 18 Successful : 18 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 28 Successful : 28 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 30 Successful : 30 2.3 Significant HSTARs: At 001/0703Z, an NSSC-1 Status Buffer Message occurred. The result was that all data for one iteration of WFPC 5369 was lost. Operations personnel had configured the STR for engineering data for a re-conditioning test, and had omitted the re-configuration for science operations. 2.4 Operations Notes: In addition to the operational STR error reported in 2.3, there were some data inversions and several short periods of engineering data loss from STGT operations 3.0 ANOMALY STATUS: 3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None 3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None 4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /CAW -END-
