HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1306 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 017/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOS/BL 5530 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make Y-base maps of the FOS detectors using internal lamps. The purpose is to determine the location of the spectra on the diodes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three sets of WF/PC-2 5381 (UV Spectral Distribution in Low Luminosity Active Galaxies: Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the inner regions of the low luminosity active galaxies NGC-4639, NGC-5273 and NGC-4278. The objective is to investigate the relationship between these objects and higher luminosity AGNs. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5568 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Decon) The WF/PC-2 was used to make an internal flat field calibration observation using the VIS lamp and the internal source as part of a decontamination operation. The observation was completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed FGS 5334 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference Frame: BR0-11, Part 1) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of several stars (i.e., 1101-325IN, 720-REF, 721-REF, 722-REF and INCA221-61) to help tie the HIPPARCOS and extragalactic reference frames together. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of galaxies NGC-4586, IC1993 and NGC-4067 to provide statistics on the nuclear cusps, stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed GHRS/1 5594 (GHRS Side 1 Sensitivity Monitor: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make calibration observations of star BD28D4211 to monitor the long-term sensitivity of the system. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5378 (Morphological Evolution of Galaxies in Clusters at Z = 0.5) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy GAL-CLUS-A to study its morphology. The exposure time was 1200 seconds. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 2: Flats Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. There were two reported data groups which were lost during a Science Tape Recorder track change. The data is unrecoverable. No other anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies C55.0, 3C293.0 and 3C300.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5671 (GHRS Dark Noise Monitor: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make dark calibration images. These were strictly internal tests for routine monitoring of detector dark noise. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed GHRS/2 5599 (GHRS Side 2 Sensitivity Monitor: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make some long term sensitivity monitoring by making observations of standard star BD+28D4211. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed FOS/BL 5444 (A UV Spectral Library of Metal- Poor Massive Stars) The FOS (Blue Side) was used for a snapshot program to obtain ultraviolet spectra of AV223 a metal-poor star in the LMC. It will be useful for stellar atmosphere and stellar evolution studies. The observations completed without incident. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5222 (High Resolution Imaging of Nuclear Stellar clusters in AGN N1365) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution images of the nuclear stellar clusters in AGN NGC-1365 to remove the scattered light from the central source nucleus in an attempt to learn more about the structure of the region near the nucleus. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed FGS 5333 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic Reference frame: BR12-23, Part 2) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of several stars (i.e., 1404+286IN, 440-REF, 441-REF, 442-REF and INCA221) whose apparent position lies near extragalactic objects. All of these objects have been observed by the HIPPARCOS satellite. The intent is to tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to the extragalactic reference frame. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 High, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5777 (SINS: The Supernova Intensity Study) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the supernova SN-1994I to study the development of the supernovae and its curcumstellar matter. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.19 Completed FOC/96 5154 (FOC Observations of Elliptical Galaxies) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of nearby elliptical galaxy NGC-4278 to determine the luminosity distribution of its core and details about its point-like nucleus. The observations were reported to show faint images of the target. 1.20 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30 degrees. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.21 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxies NGC-3351 and NGC-3621 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.22 Completed FGS 5174 (Astrometric Companions Search: Cycle 4) FGS #3 was used to make astrometric observations of the possible binary dwarf star G146-72 to look for an astrometric unseen low mass companion. The OSS monitored the observations and assessed the data quality. No anomalies were noted. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 5132 (A Photometric Search for Planets of Near by Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric observations of nearby star HD10700 to search for possible planets. The exposure time was calculated so that area beyond 1.2 arcseconds from the central star is not saturated. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.24 Completed WF/PC-2 5773 (WF/PC-2 Augmentation - NGC-604 and N-16 : Cycle 4 and Future Cycles) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of NGC-604-C. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.25 Completed WF/PC-2 5234 (Faint Clusters of Galaxies (WC09): Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of faint galaxy cluster Gal-CLUS-13.
