HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1320 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z Daily Status Report as of 037/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats, Smaller Set) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of MARK471, NGC-6104, IC3576, MARK1040 and IR1121-281 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in these AGNs. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FGS 5557 (Intermediate Plate Scale: Cycle 4 Calibration) FGS #3 was used to make astrometric observations of stars 4727-25, HD65949-RE, 4727-J-REF, 4727-H-REF, 4727-B-REF, 4727-C-REF, 4727-222-R, et. al to be used for plate scale calibrations. These stars were also observed using the HIPPARCOS satellite. The observation were executed as schedule, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5085 (Turbulence in H II Regions) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the small scale turbulent H II regions located in NGC-1976-8 (aka, the Orion Nebula) using several different line and continuum filters. Ten adjacent fields of view were images. No anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FOC/96 5477 (Spectral Index Mapping and Secular Changes in the Jet of M-87: Cycle 4 High) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the nucleus, jet, and counter-jet in galaxy M-87. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed FOS/BL 5351 (Properties of Intermediate Redshift Galactic Disks Causing Damped Lyman-Alpha) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make observations to study the diffuse material at intermediate redshifts that is identified by absorbing Lyman-Alpha spectrum from quasar 1209.1+10. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed S/C 5582 (FOC/48 Monthly Activation (Camera Section Only): Cycle 4) This proposal was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of galaxies NGC-4567 and NGC-4659 to provide statistics on the nuclear cusps, stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5574 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4: Polarization Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of star R Mon to obtain both polarized and unpolarized images of the target to calibrate the instrument. Visual flat observations was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed FGS 5316 (Masses of Pre-Main Sequence Stars: Cycle 4 Medium) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used in the TRANS Mode to make astrometric observations of the pre-main sequence binary star ELIAS-12 in the Taurus star forming region. The FGS data will provide the apparent orbits. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5419 (A Search for Very Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-6500, which is known to have ultraviolet bright, low-luminosity, active galactic nuclei. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed FOS/BL 5530 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make Y-base maps of the FOS detectors using internal lamps. The purpose is to determine the location of the spectra on the diodes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed GHRS/1 5726 (Composition of Gas in Individual Interstellar Clouds: Cycle 4 Carryover) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was scheduled to make observations of standard early type star HD151890 which is located in the galactic disk to study the composition of interstellar gas clouds. Spectral lines due to atoms such as C, N, O, Si, Mg, and S in different ionization states should be seen in the line of sight of this star. Observation #15 was skipped at 035/0844Z, due to an on-board timing delay cause by a GHRS carrousel rest. HSTAR 5117 was written. No other anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 5746 (High Spatial Resolution Imaging and Polarization of AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution polarized images of the AGN within NGC-5728 to provide information about the central source which is hidden behind obscuring matter. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30 degrees. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed GHRS/1 5689 (A Search for Silicon and Carbon in GP Com : Cycle 4 Carryover) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make observations of the GP-COM system looking for emission lines of Silicon and Carbon from its accretion disk. It is hoped that Si IV and C IV lines will be detected. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 5236 (Nuclei of Nearby Normal Galaxies: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of nearby galaxy NGC-4472-NU to obtain luminosity and color gradients, and to search for bright stars, globular clusters, and interstellar dust. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.20 Completed FOS/RD 5538 (Cycle 4 FOS Spectral Flat Field and Monitor) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make flat field calibration images using hot white dwarf standard source WD0501+527 which is known to have a nearly featureless spectrum. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 5371 (HST Medium_ Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium Low Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make low galactic latitude deep multicolor images of objects such as galaxies, and stars in our galaxy. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.22 Completed WF/PC-2 5372 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, Low Galactic Latitude, C-R Split) The WF/PC-2 was used to make low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were completed as scheduled in fine lock without apparent anomaly. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 5343 (WFC Imaging of Nearby Bright Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the bright quasar HE1029-140 and its host galaxy. The goal is to study the morphology of this galaxy, and to see how it differs from non-QSO galaxies. They also will be looking for the relationship between the properties of the host galaxy and the luminosity of the quasar. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.24 Completed WF/PC-2 5741 (Galaxies and Clusters, WF/PC-2 GTO Augmentation, Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the nuclei of the barred spiral galaxy NGC-4274-NU. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.25 Completed WF/PC-2 5512 (Cores of Early Type Galaxies: Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the nucleus of early type galaxy NGC-4621-NU.
