HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1340 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/03/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/06/95 Daily Status Report as of 065/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6142 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earth Flats, Smaller Set Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth Flat calibration images for the ultraviolet and narrow-band filters to correct for the telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5372 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, Low Galactic Latitude, C-R Split) The WF/PC-2 was used to make low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were completed as scheduled in fine lock without apparent anomaly. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5353 (Low-Mass Binaries in the Hyades: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the low-mass, late M-Class dwarf stars RHY225 and RHY009 which are located in the Hyades cluster. Some of the companion stars may be brown dwarfs. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5409 (Direct UV and Spectral Tomogrpah Imaging of Alpha Orionis, Cycle 4 High) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make ultraviolet observations of the super giant star Alpha Orionis (aka, HD39801, Betelgeuse). A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FGS 6138 (Long Term Stability Monitoring of FGS #3) FGS #3 was used to make astrometric calibration observations of stars OF52, OF55-REF, OF63-REF, OF89-REF, OF91-REF, OF79-REF, OF51-REF, et. al. located on open star cluster M-35 to monitor the long term stability of the FGS. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the galactic plane. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Three Sets of FOS/RD 6141 (The Aftermath of SL-9 and Jupiter) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make spectrographic observations of the planet Jupiter to study the aftermath of the impact of the comet SL-9. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6140 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Ramp filters, Internal Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth calibration images as part of a ramp filter calibration test. The observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed GHRS/2 5488 (Measurement of the Cosmological Deuterium to Hydrogen Abundance Ratio) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make spectrographic observations of the quasar QSO-171938 to look for intergalactic deuterium and hydrogen that is in the line of sight to the quasar. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5419 (A Search for Very Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-4651, which is known to have ultraviolet bright, low-luminosity, active galactic nuclei. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of E1258+289 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5766 (Determination of the Extragalactic distance Scale - M-101 Carryover) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-5457 (aka, M-101) to help improve the estimate of the Hubble Constant. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 5444 (A UV Spectral Library of Metal- Poor Massive Stars) The FOS (Blue Side) was used for a snapshot program to obtain ultraviolet spectra of BI97 and NS124-69, both metal-poor stars in the LMC. It will be useful for stellar atmosphere and stellar evolution studies. The observations completed without incident. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 5302 (The Size and Morphology of Normal Galaxies at Z ~ 3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Lyman_Alpha emission observations of galaxy PKS0528-25 which is known to have a redshift of Z ~ 3. It is hoped that the nature of this source can be determined. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5374 (The Bright, Mysterious White Dwarf Star Procyon B, Cycle 4 Split) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright white dwarf star Alpha-C-Min (aka, Procyon B) with a number of different filters. The objective is to determine the temperature, radius, and spectral type of this star. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.19 Completed FGS 5586 (Parallaxes of Hyades Cluster Members: Cycle 4 High) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of stars located in the Hyades cluster (i.e., PCEN383, VA383, AST64-REF, AST65-REF, AST69-REF, AST61-REF, AST62-REF ) as part of the AST/GTO program to determine trigonometric parallaxes of the cluster members and thereby define the Population I, zero age, main sequence. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 5630 (Luminous Stars in Old Stellar Populations) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of NGC-1978 to study its luminous stars which are located in old stellar populations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 5753 (The Supernova Intensive Study) This proposal is part of a continuing project to study the development of supernovae and their circumstellar matter. In this case, LMC-SN1987A was observed. The observation completed normally, and there were no reported problems. 1.22 Completed FOS/RD 5441 (The Inner Regions of Quasars: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make spectrographic observations of the variable quasar B21248+30. The observations will be correlated with radio and X-Ray data for this object. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been reported. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations.
