HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1355 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/24/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/27/95 Daily Status Report as of 086/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Seven Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of PKS2048-57, US195, NGC5347, F341, MARK871, NGC-4156, and F348 to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in these AGNs. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 5698 (Physical Conditions in Low Z Absorption Line Systems in QSOs) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make observations of Low Z QSO PG1630+377 to study its physical conditions and to measure the Lyman-Alpha and Lyman-Beta lines. Guide star acquisition lost lock at 083/0614Z, and regained lock at 083/0628Z (HSTAR 5163). All three subsequent re-acquisitions were normal. The FHST map at 083/0943Z showed excessive attitude error, and an ARU corrective maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. No other anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6145 (Ultraviolet Imagery of Jovian Aurora to support FUV Spectroscopy) The WF-PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet images of the Jovian aurora on the planet Jupiter. Observations were made in the far ultraviolet by the Astro-2 Shuttle mission with the HUT camera. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FOS/RD 5531 (FOS Target Acquisition Test) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make observations of standard star STAR-22134 to conduct an acquisition test. A TALED observation was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed FGS 5316 (Masses of Pre-Main Sequence Stars: Cycle 4 Medium) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used in the TRANS Mode to make astrometric observations of the pre-main sequence binary stars ZZ-Tau, and HK-Tau in the Taurus star forming region. The FGS data will provide the apparent orbits. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5383 (The Wolf-Rayet Population of Giant H II Regions in NGC-2403: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of giant H II regions in NGC-2403-17. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5343 (WFC Imaging of Nearby Bright Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the bright quasar PG1309+355 and its host galaxy. The goal is to study the morphology of this galaxy, and to see how it differs from non-QSO galaxies. They also will be looking for the relationship between the properties of the host galaxy and the luminosity of the quasar. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed GHRS/1 5413 (The Local ISM Flow Within the Heliosphere) The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations to study the flow of neutral atoms in the interstellar medium by observing diffuse sky background in Lyman Alpha at a location designated as IMP-UPWIND. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.12 Completed FOS/RD 5471 (Spectroscopy of Markarian 78: Cycle 4 Medium) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red side) was used to make observations of Markarian Galaxy 73 (At Position #1, and at an off-set position.) This is to study the interaction between its jet and the interstellar medium within a few kilo-parsecs of the galaxy. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed FOS/RD 5455 (The Level of Ionization and Chemical Composition of QSO BAL Region Gas) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make ultraviolet observations of quasi-stellar object (QSO) H0903+175 which is known to have broad absorption lines (BALs). The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 18 Successful : 18 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 13 Successful : 13 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 33 Successful : 33 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: No problems were encountered in the checkout of the SAMS facility that was performed this weekend.
