HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1385 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/05/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/08/95 Daily Status Report as of 128/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies 3C299.0 and 3C263.1 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxies NGC-4725, NGC-4725 and NGC-4414 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within these galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed GHRS/1 5712 (Local Interstellar Medium and D/H Ratio) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make observations of the standard star HD128621 (aka, Beta Cent) to study the local interstellar medium which lies along the line of sight to the target star. The goal is to observe interstellar H and D in absorption against the stellar emission lines, and thereby determine the H to D ratio. The guide star acquisition at 125/0819Z failed to achieve fine lock on FGS#2 due to a search radius limit exceeded (HSTAR 5202). FGS#2 was subsequently dropped from the acquisition procedure and coarse track back-up was achieved on FGS#1 only. No other anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FOC/96 5519 (FOC f/96 Detector Focusing: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Camera (F/96) was used to verify the focus by making images of the standard target NGC-5139 at six different focus settings, including the current optimum. The observations were executed as schedule, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the galactic plane. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6143 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration: Smaller Set, Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make single CCD calibration observations of standard star GRW+70D582 to monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of the PC1 and WF3. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed FGS 6147 (Extragalactic Astronomy and Astrophysics Final: Cycle 4 Observations) The FGSs were used to make observations of targets 1435+638IN, 530-REF, 531-REF, 532-REF, INCA221-98. The objective of this long-term program is to determine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS reference relative to the extragalactic frame. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30 degrees. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5600 (GHRS Side 2 Wavelength Monitor (1st Order Gratings): Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make wavelength and resolution calibration observations of its first order gratings using the internal calibration lamp. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5568 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal flat field calibration observation using the VIS lamp and the internal source as part of decontamination operations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of galaxies NGC-4631, 0344-3630, NGC-4452 and NGC-1326 to provide statistics on the nuclear cusps, stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5512 (Cores of Early Type Galaxies: Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the nucleus of early type galaxy NGC-4621. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High Galactic Latitude) The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime science observations. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed FOS/RD 5359 (Spectra and Chromospheres of Carbon and M Stars: Cycle 4 Medium) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make ultraviolet spectral observations of star HD148783. These observations will be used with theoretical models to infer the temperatures and density structure and velocity fields of the outer atmosphere in these evolved, non-Mira giants. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The guide star acquisition at 126/2030Z occurred during ZOE. Upon AOS the FHST maps showed V1 errors of 339 arcseconds. A corrective ARU/PRT maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. No other anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed GHRS/2 5671 (GHRS Dark Noise Monitor: Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make dark calibration images. These were strictly internal tests for routine monitoring of detector dark noise. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby active galactic nuclei of NGC-526-A to study the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed FOS/RD 5441 (The Inner Regions of Quasars: Cycle 4) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make spectrographic observations of the variable quasar LB2136. The observations will be correlated with radio and X-Ray data for this object. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies have been reported. 1.20 Completed FOS/RD 5664 (Quasar Absorption Line Survey: Cycle 4 High) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make spectrographic observations of quasi-stellar object PG1248+401 to look for absorption lines due to gas in the intergalactic medium and galactic halos. The Guide star acquisition at 127/1201 failed to coarse track on FGS#1, and failed completely on FGS#2 (HSTAR 5664). The next two reacquisition also achieved coarse track on FGS#1. No other anomalies were noted. 1.21 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5564 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 : Photometric Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration images of standard white dwarf target GRW+70D582 to measure the relative sensitivities of the four chips through a set of five filters. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.22 Completed WF/PC-2 5682 (UV Spectra of Low-Redshift QSOs Augmentation: Cycle 4, Carry-over) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of low redshift QSO MC1548+114. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 15 Successful : 14 The Guide star acquisition at 127/1201 failed to coarse track on FGS#1, and failed completely on FGS#2 (HSTAR 5664).
