HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1398 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/24/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/25/95 Daily Status Report as of 145/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOS/BL 5532 (FOS Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Sides) was used to monitor the instrument's background (dark) images. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 5125 (Velocity Dispersions in the Nuclei of Giant Ellipticals) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used with its small apertures to make observations of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC-4486 to map its stellar dispersion and rotation in the galaxy's central region. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6252 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 4 Crafting Test. This parallel program uses the WF/PC-2 and target fields at galactic latitudes above 10 degrees. Galactic star counts and the structure of the galactic halo will be studied. The observation completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-4725 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 3: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies 3C277.0, 3C268.3, 3C352.0, 3C337.0, and 3C343.1 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies's morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6233 (Stellar Populations in NGC-147) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain deep images about 0.5 degrees from the center of NGC-147, a dwarf elliptical companion of the Andromeda galaxy. The images will be used to obtain the color magnitude diagram for the stars in the old-population galaxy. This will put constraints on the age of the stars. Shorter exposures will also be obtained to search for any unusual objects. The proposal completed without incident. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 10 Successful : 10 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: There were no reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
