HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1401 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/30/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/31/95 Daily Status Report as of 151/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6230 (Luminous Stars in Old Stellar Populations) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of the halo region of NCG-5128 (Centaurus A). The objective is to construct a color magnitude diagram for the giant branch stars in this galaxy. HST provides the first opportunity to study stellar populations in giant elliptical galaxies. The observations were completed nominally. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5981 (Calibration of Nearby Type IA Supernova as Standard Candles: NGC-4639) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars in Galaxy NGC-4639 (which has produced a Type IA Supernova) to calibrate the nova's absolute brightness so that it can be used as a standard candle for distance measurements. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-4725 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 2: Flats Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5402 (Multiple Arc Systems in X-Ray Selected Clusters: Cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain deep exposures of the X-Ray bright galaxy cluster MS2137.3-2 to look for gravitationally lensed objects that might be seen in the cluster. The observations were completed successfully 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 14 Successful : 14 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: There were no reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
