HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1414 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/16/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/19/95 Daily Status Report as of 170/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6311 (The Structure of Nova Shells) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the shell of recurrent nova T-Pyxidis. The expansion of the shell, and the size distribution of the knots in the shell, will be determined. The exposure was shortened when the guide star acquisition took longer than had been predicted. HSTAR 5219 was written to document this event. Otherwise, the observations were executed as scheduled, and no other anomalies have been noted. 1.2 Completed GHRS/1 5719 (Echelle Observations of the Low Red Shift Lyman Alpha Forest in 3C273) The High Resolution spectrograph (Side One) was used to make high resolution (~4 km/sec) observations of low red shift radio quasar 3C273.0 to study its Lyman Alpha Forest. The region of interest contains two red shifted Lyman Alpha lines at 1251.46 and 1255.7 A0. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor. 1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/RD 5695 (Black Holes and Nuclear Dynamics in a Completed Sample of Virgo Ellipticals) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make observations of the nuclear region of elliptical galaxy NGC-4570 which is located in the Virgo Cluster. The objective is to obtain rotation curves for a region near the nucleus of this galaxy, and thus obtain the mass of the core. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6251 (Medium Deep Survey - Crafting Test) The WF/PC-2 was used in this continuation of the medium deep survey. The proposal is targeting rare objects (lenses, peculiar galaxies, faint stars) and sources related to the faint blue galaxy problem. This observation was completed with no reported problems. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed GHRS/2 5389 (The Nature of Interstellar Cloud Envelopes: Physical Conditions) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make observations of star HD147933 to study the nature of the interstellar cloud envelopes in the line of sight of the star. The observations were executed as scheduled and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FOC/96 5522 (FOC Post-COSTAR Polarization Calibration) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make polarization calibration observations using standard object LK-HA-233 as a source to help find the transmission coefficients. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6252 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 4 Crafting Test) This parallel program uses the WF/PC-2 and target fields at galactic latitudes above 10 degrees. Galactic star counts and the structure of the galactic halo will be studied. The observation completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed FOS/BL 5658 (White Dwarf Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make absolute sensitivity calibrations of the detectors using standard white dwarf star GD153. The observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies 3C458.0 and 3C15.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed GHRS/1 5542 (GHRS Side One Wavelength (1st Order Gratings): Cycle 4) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) used the spectral calibration lamp (Side Two) to calibrate the Side One characteristics. Notice that the Side Two lamp was used to calibrate Side One. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5236 (Nuclei of Nearby Normal Galaxies: Cycle 4) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of nearby galaxy NGC-224-NUC to obtain luminosity and color gradients, and to search for bright stars, globular clusters, and interstellar dust. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed FOS/BL 6146 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture - Part 2) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to conduct a test to determine the repeatability of positioning the filter-grating wheel. All observations were internal. A wave length calibration image was also taken. All observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 33 Successful : 33 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 22 Successful : 22 2.3 Significant HSTARs: None 2.4 Operations Notes: Early on day 168, there were 12 instances of data inversions during STGT operations.
