HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1458 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/18/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/21/95 Daily Status Report as of 233/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal Monitor - Vis Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed FOC/96 5491 (Young Galaxies and the IG Medium) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make spectroscopic observations of starburst galaxy SGP1-10 at Z~0.4 to measure the size of the discontinuity at the Lyman limit. Images were also made to locate the zero point of the spectra and to resolve structural details in these previously unresolved objects. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted 1.4 Completed GHRS/2 5868 (The Mass of the Classical Cepheid T Mon) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make spectrographic observations of the classical Cepheid star T Mon (aka, HD44990) and its companion. From these spectra, which cover the wavelength region of 1840-1880 A0, the orbital velocity of the companion will be determined. A wavelength calibration observation was also completed. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of Spectra and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make calibration observations in order to determine the location of the spectra and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were internal. A Taled calibration was also completed. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal bias, internal flat images and K-Spot calibrations to monitor the health of the cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5837 (Ultraviolet Imaging and Spectroscopy of the Icy Galilean Satellites) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of Jupiter's moon Ganymeade to study the albedo features caused by SO2 absorption. These observations will be coordinated with the IUE Spacecraft and other ground based observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5957 (Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations for radio galaxies 3C382.0 and 3C263.0 to study the morphology of these radio galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 6214 (FOS Spectropolarimetry of OVV Quasars) The Faint Object Spectrograph ( Blue Side) was used to make ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the optically violent variable (OVV) class quasars 3C345 and 3C454.3 to measure the UV wavelength dependence of the polarization. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Three Sets of WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5930 (WF/PC-2 Imaging of Intermediate Redshift Radio Galaxies.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the intermediate redshift radio galaxy 3C79.0. The target is known to exhibit significant structure on the sub-arcsecond scale. Both line and continuum filters were used. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5931 (Location of Particle Acceleration in Radio Hot Spots) The WF/PC-2 was used to make signal to noise images of Pictor-A-W to study the location of particle acceleration in its radio hot spots. Radio hot spots are just one of many locations where active galactic nuclei (AGN) phenomena imply the presence of ultra-relativistic particles. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed FGS 6036 (Detection and Mass Determination of Low Mass Companions to nearby M Dwarf) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS modes to make astrometric observations of low mass companions to M class dwarf star GL791 and four reference stars. This will lead to a mass determination for the stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6137 (A Search for Brown Dwarfs and Luminous Young Planets in the Hyades) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of M class star RHY281 which is located in the Hyades cluster looking for planetary and brown dwarf companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-1425 looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of Planetary Nebula Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of planetary nebula A74 to study its nucleus and to look for possible companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 19 Successful : 19 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 28 Successful : 28 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 36 Successful : 36 2.3 Operations Notes: The formal run of SMGT-21 was concluded on Friday.
