HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1459 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/21/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/22/95 Daily Status Report as of 234/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of Planetary Nebula Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of planetary nebulae NGC-7027 and NGC-6826 to study their nuclei and to look for possible companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6184 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Photometric Calibration Monitor UV/Opt STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet and optical calibration images of standard star GRW+70D582. The purpose is to monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of the WF/PC-2 from the far ultraviolet to the near-IR. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5957 (Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of radio galaxy 3C277.1 to study the morphology of the radio galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Two sets of WF/PC-2 5973 (The Host Galaxies of Radio Quite High Redshift Quasi-stellar Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the host galaxies of radio quiet high red shift quasi-stellar objects 2206-187 and 1313-156. These data will be compared to existing data sets for radio-loud, high-redshift QSOs and ground based data on radio-quiet, low-redshift QSOs. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5832 (Synoptic Monitoring of Seasonal Phenomena on Mars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make synoptic monitoring observations of the Planet Mars looking for seasonal phenomena. A variety of filters were used. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal Monitor - Vis Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-1365 looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5954 (The Exceptionally Bright, Compact Starburst Galaxy 0833+652) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the exceptionally bright, compact starbursting galaxy 0833+652 (aka, GAL-083824). The main goal of this project is to place constraints on the massive star population resulting from the starburst. The observations were completed with no reported anomalies, although the FHST update and guide star failures (reported in 2.1) occurred near the beginning of this observation. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6137 (A Search for Brown Dwarfs and Luminous Young Planets in the Hyades) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of M class star RHY386 which is located in the Hyades cluster looking for planetary and brown dwarf companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 10 Successful : 9 One guide star acquisition, which had been preceded by a failed full maneuver update, itself failed at 233/213506Z. HSTAR 5254 was written for this event. Later, at 234/024858Z, as documented in HSTAR 5255, an acquisition failed to coarse track. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 3 Successful : 3 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 28 Successful : 26 2.3 Operations Notes: There were two instances (6 and 12 minutes) of non-recoverable engineering data loss due to problems at STGT. TTRs were written for each occurrence. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
