HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1502 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/23/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/24/95 Daily Status Report as of 297/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5957 (Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations for radio galaxy 3C390.0 = to study the morphology of the radio galaxy. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed FGS 6264 (Parallax of RR-Lyrae) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the variable = star RR-Lyrae in order to measure its parallax. RR-Lyrae is the = proto-type for a class of variable stars whose pulsation periods correlate = with their absolute magnitudes. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Competed WF/PC-2 5982 (Imaging of a Complete Sample of the Nearest = Infrared Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make two color observations of the nearby = infrared quasar (IR QSO) MRK231. It is believed that this IR QSO resulted = from the merger of two gas-rich galaxies. The observations were executed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies) = The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy = 3C111.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's = morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5844 (HST Investigation of a Bright, New Comet) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright new comet = Hale-Bopp (aka, Comet C/1995 O1). The images will yield information of = the nuclear size and coma near the nucleus. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5991 (The Fundamental Plane of Early-Type = Galaxies in X-Ray Clusters at Z=3D0.0) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of X-Ray galactic cluster = GAL-CLUS-2 in order to measure the scale heights, surface brightness = profile, color distributions and morphology of the cluster. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed GHRS/2 6249 (Observations of Interstellar Oxygen) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of star HD24760 in order to study interstellar = oxygen in the line of sight to that star. It was found previously that = the oxygen abundance in the direction of Orion is only half of the solar = abundance. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed GHRS/2 6056 (Spectroscopy and Imagery of the Orion = Nebula) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = observations of selected sections of the Orion Nebula (aka, NGC-1976). A = wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 10 Successful : 10 2.3 Operations Notes: Operations personnel performed special commanding to handle the = partial solar eclipse that occurred from 297/0014Z to 297/0827Z. No DF-224 SPC load is scheduled for day 297. This is the first = occasion for the new loading scheme which allows for 48-hour loads. Due to the shuttle's use of TDRSS services, the High/Low Gyro Bias = Update w^ll not occur until approximately 298/0730Z. The last update was = at 295/1913Z. Guide star acquisition loss of locks reported on DOY = 95.292/10:00:33 (reference HSTAR 5335, FOS Dwell Scan Reject) and DOY = 95.293/13:10:45 (reference HSTAR 5336) were due to high FGS-1 star = selector servo B comp errors. The first event occurred during an SI Error = Null slew. The second event occurred during a GHRS on-board target = acquisition. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
