HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1508 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/31/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/01/95 Daily Status Report as of 305/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed GHRS/1 5950 (Spectroscopy of the Three UV Brightest Known = High-Redshift Quasars) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = ultraviolet observations of quasar HS-1103+64 which is known to be one of = the brightest high redshift quasars. The objectives are to measure the C, = N, O, and Ne abundances in the halos of early galaxies, to measure the = intensity of the ionizing UV background, to measure He I, and to study the = Lyman-Alpha forest. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5924 (Nuclear Emission Line Region Associated = with Compact Flat Spectrum) The WF/PC-2 was used to make spectrographic observations of the = nuclear emission region of galaxy NGC-5675 to study its compact flat = spectrum. There is evidence that this jet-produced AGN is powered by = accretion disks feeding massive black hole. The observations were = executed as schedule, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FGS 6268 (The Parallax of NGC-6853) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations in order = measure the parallax to NGC-6853 (stars 48, 52, 29 and 63) one of the = nearest planetary neabulae. The observations were executed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random, long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5906 (Star Counts and Color-Magnitude Diagrams of = Four Bright Globular Cluster) The WF/PC-2 Camera was used to make multi-color images (V and I = Bands) of a globular cluster located in the Andromeda Galaxy (M-31) in = order to make a color-magnitude diagram of the cluster. The observations = were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed GHRS/2 6249 (Observations of Interstellar Oxygen) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of star HD5394 in order to study interstellar = oxygen in the line of sight to that star. It was found previously that = the oxygen abundance in the direction of Orion is only half of the solar = abundance. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6215 (Saturn's Aurora and Airglow) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the planet = Saturn in order to study its airglow and auroral regions. The emission of = Lyman-Alpha, H2 Lyman and the Werner bands were imaged. The observations = were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6235 (High Resolution Imaging of Radio Galaxies = at Redshift Z~1.0) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of faint radio galaxy = 3C49 which is known to have a redshift of about one. This is to attempt = to determine the cause of the alignment of the blue-excess along the radio = axis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions = of Planetary Nebula Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = planetary nebula NGC-6853 to study its nuclei and to look for possible = companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 20 Successful : 20 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH -END-
