HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1517 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/14/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/15/95 Daily Status Report as of 319/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5353 (Low-Mass Binaries in the Hyades: Cycle 4 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the low-mass, late M-Class = dwarf star RHY312 which is located in the Hyades cluster. Some of the = companion stars may be brown dwarfs. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Decon) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark = calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures to = be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6125 (Imaging and Spectroscopy of SN 1885 in M-31) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Super Nova SN 1885 = (aka, S Andromeda) which is located in M-31 (aka, NGC-224, the Andromeda = Galaxy). The subsequent plan is to have the Faint Object Spectrograph = obtain spectra of both the supernova remnant (SNR) and the bulge of M-31. = The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with flux = excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6280 (Planetary Nebular Structure) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain H-alpha images of two planetary = nebulae. The goal is to study the filamentary structures and, for = NGC7293, to look for temporal changes in the condensations by comparing = these images with those obtained for proposal 5106. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5897 (Ages For the Oldest Star Clusters in the Large = Magellanic Cloud) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of star cluster NGC-1976 = which is known to be one of the oldest clusters in the Large Magellanic = Cloud. From these data a color magnitude diagram will be constructed that = extends below the main sequence turnoff. The following HSTARS identify problems which impacted this proposal. =B7 HSTAR 5361 - GS acquisition failed due primary SRLE. Acquistion = preceded by roll maneuver updates only. =B7 HSTAR 5362 - related to attitude error (see HSTAR 5361) =B7 HSTAR 5363 - related to attitude error (see HSTAR 5361) 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 and FOS/RD 5976 (Herbig-Haro Object Near the Orion = Nebula) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of NGC-1976 (aka, M-42, = The Orion Nebula.) looking for possible Herbig-Haro Objects. The images = will be used to determine the excitation mechanisms of the HH objects, and = their interaction with the nebula and cloud gas. The observations were = completed as plan, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.9 Completed GHRS/2 6249 (Observations of Interstellar Oxygen) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of star HD57061 in order to study interstellar = oxygen in the line of sight to that star. It was found previously that the = oxygen abundance in the direction of Orion is only half of the solar = abundance. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal Monitor = - Vis Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration = images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The = observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed GHRS/2 5860 (Detection of ^11B/^10B and Galactic Chemical = Evolution) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used in the Echelle = Mode to make spectrographic observations of star HD102870 to study the = isotope-split Boron-11 and Boron-10 lines at 2090 A0. A wavelength = calibration observation was also taken. The following HSTAR identifies = problems/impacts to this proposal. =B7 HSTAR 5364 - FGS#1 star selector servo B became stuck during the GS = acquisition ZOE period & remained stuck until subsequent reacquisition = (aprox. 87 mins.) 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 06 Successful : 04 (See HSTARs 5361 & 5364) Scheduled Reacquisitions : 05 Successful : 04 (see HSTARs 5361 & 5362) 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 11 Successful : 11 2.3 Operations Notes: none 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: none /DMH
