HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1518 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/15/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/16/95 Daily Status Report as of 320/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6163 (Focus, X-Pitch and Y-Pitch) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to determine the = proper values to set for the FOS high voltage, and the X and Y pitch. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed GHRS/1/2 5870 ("Maunder Minimum" Stars) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used to = make far ultraviolet observations of solar type star HD3651. This star = exhibits weak, non-variable Ca II emission and a long rotation period. = The implication is that this star may have a weak magnetic field and = undergoing a "Maunder Minimum". The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of Spectra = and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = calibration observations in order to determine the location of the spectra = and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were internal. = A Taled calibration was also completed. The observations were completed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Decon) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark = calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures = to be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance = Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2541 = looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this = observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of = 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5987 (X-Ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of distant clusters of = galaxies. These clusters were chosen since they are x-ray luminous. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.8 Competed WF/PC-2 5982 (Imaging of a Complete Sample of the Nearest = Infrared Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make two color observations of the nearby = infrared quasar (IR QSO) IRAS08572. It is believed that this IR QSO = resulted from the merger of two gas-rich galaxies. The observations were = executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5978 (Host Galaxy of Distant Radio Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the host galaxy of = distant radio-loud quasar QSO-1026+4. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 17 Successful : 16 The FHST update scheduled at 319/1306Z failed. 2.3 Operations Notes: The regular checkout of the backup SAMS facility was performed this = morning, with no significant problems reported. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
