HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1521 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/20/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/21/95 Daily Status Report as of 325/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOS/RD 5824 (Occultation of GSC5249 by Saturn) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to observe = Saturn's atmosphere and its rings while being occulted by GSC5249. = Spectra of the occulted star, of Saturn's atmosphere and of Saturn's rings = will be obtained before and after the occultation. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6216 (Saturn's Ring Atmosphere) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of Saturn's rings when they = are edge-on to the Earth. The objective is to detect an "OH atmosphere" = associated with the rings. Different filters will be used to discriminate = between dust and OH emission, and to subtract scattered light. These = observations will be used to determine exposure times for a later series = of ring-plane crossing observations in August. The proposal completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of = Planetary Nebula Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = planetary nebulae NGC-6891 and NGC-2392 to study their nuclei and to look = for possible companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance = Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2541 = looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this = observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of = 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5983 (Curcumstellar Disks in Young Nebulous = Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the young nearby = nebulous cluster NGC-2024-1 looking for possible curcumstellar disks = (Solar nebula analogs), like the type seen in the Orion Nebula. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 and GHRS 5942 (The Nature of the Star Formation = Trigger in NGC 1068) The WF/PC-2 and the High Resolution Spectrograph were used to = observe four bright starburst knots in NGC-1068. The spectra will be = analyzed to constrain the stellar ages and star formation history within = the knots. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal Monitor = - Vis Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration = images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The = observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed FGS 6325 (Monitor the Long-Term Stability for FGS #3 Still) FGS#3 was used to make observations of standard stars OF957, = OF957-REF, OF539-REF, OF712-REF, OF756-REF, et. al which are located in = the star cluster M-35 in order to monitor the long-term internal stability = of the FGS unit. During this proposal, three parameters, F3YFCPA, = F3YFCPB, and F3XFCPA, flagged high briefly (less than a minute). These = events were documented in HSTAR 5369. Otherwise, the observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 9 Successful : 9 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no significant operational problems reported. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
