HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1524 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/27/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/28/95 Daily Status Report as of 332/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5982 (Imaging of a Complete Sample of the Nearest = Infrared Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make two color observations of the nearby = infrared quasar (IR QSO) MRK463. It is believed that this IR QSO resulted = from the merger of two gas-rich galaxies. The observations were executed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed GHRS/2 5315 (Stellar Wind Instabilities) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to obtain high = signal/noise spectra of the N V, Si IV, and C IV lines of the O-star = HD210839. The objective is to monitor the stellar wind on short time = scales at sufficiently high signal to distinguish between low-velocity, = mechanically-driven instabilities and intrinsic, radiatively-driven = instabilities, and to define the interaction between the two regimes. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of Planetary = Nebula Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = planetary nebula A34 to study its nucleus and to look for possible = companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5836 (Saturn Ring Plane Crossing Observations in = August and November 1995) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the rings of the = planet Saturn during the ring plan crossing in order to determine their = thickness and distortion. The moons Pan and Atlas will also be observed. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5957 (Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of radio galaxies = 3C338.0, 3C213.1, and 3C277.3 to study the morphology of these radio = galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 Galaxies: A PC = Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxy = NGC-3414 in order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a = large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover = a wide range in luminosity and environment. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed GHRS/1 5412 (The Boundary Layer White Dwarf Connection: CV = White Dwarf Rotation) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = observations of the white dwarf nova star U-Gem after a period of = outbursts. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of Spectra = and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = calibration observations in order to determine the location of the spectra = and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were internal. = A Taled calibration was also completed. The observations were completed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed FOS/RD 5951 (Ly Alpha Forest, Abundances, and Cloud = Properties) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to obtain spectra = along the line-of-sight (LOS) to the two components of QSO HE 1104-1825. = The prime intent is to measure the number density and lateral dimensions = of the clouds that produce the Lyman Alpha forest. A secondary aim is to = measure the CNO abundances in these clouds to determine the ionization = condition. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure, medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 15 Successful : 15 2.3 Operations Notes: No significant problems were reported during this operational day. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
