HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1526 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/29/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/30/95 Daily Status Report as of 334/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed FGS 6036 (Detection and Mass Determination of Low Mass = Companions to nearby M Dwarf) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS Modes to make = astrometric observations of low mass companions to M class dwarf star = GL791 and four reference stars. This will lead to a mass determination = for the stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5913 (Low-Mass Binaries and Luminosity Fuction) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low-mass binary = system NGP004 (Late Type Class M dwarf stars). The intent is to determine = why the local stellar luminosity function is flat below Mv=3D12, while = that found from more distant stars falls by an order of magnitude by = Mv=3D14. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5968 (Extragalactic Background Light) The WF/PC-2 was used to make direct observations of the magnitude = and color of the diffuse Extragalactic Background Light. Knowledge of the = value of the integrated optical flux of this background is of fundamental = importance to cosmology. Dark and bias observations were also taken. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak, flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance = Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2541 = looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of these = observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of = 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 Galaxies: A PC = Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxy = MCG126021 in order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a = large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover = a wide range in luminosity and environment. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FOC/96 6057 (Ultra--High Resolution Studies of AGNs II: = 3C279 Proper Motion) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultra-high resolution = observations of active galactic nuclei in radio galaxy 3C279 in order to = study the small scale morphology of the AGN. The data will be searched = for evidence of superluminal motion, which is known, radio observations, = and for time variable phenomena. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make long exposure, medium deep sky survey = observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel with = the prime science observations. During this proposal, there was a = one-minute loss-of lock beginning at 333/203639Z which was documented in = HSTAR 5381. Otherwise, the observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5949 (High Resolution Imaging of Galaxies = Responsible for QSO Lyman Alpha Absorption.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of Field = 1704 in order to study galaxies which are responsible for intermediate = redshift QSO Lyman Alpha absorption. It is the extended gaseous region = around these galaxies that produces the absorption. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed FOS/BL 6243 (Time Resolution Spectroscopy of Nova Cyg) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make time = resolution spectrographic observations of Nova-Cygni 1992. A 15 minute = pulsation period, and several transient phenomena have been detected in = previous observations of this nova. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 There was a one-minute loss-of-lock beginning at 333/203639Z. = HSTAR 5381 was written.
