HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1528 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/01/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/04/95 Daily Status Report as of 338/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.2 Completed FGS 6268 (The Parallax of NGC-6853) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations in order = measure the parallax to NGC-6853, one of the nearest planetary neabulae. = The observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Thirteen Sets of WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - = Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5957 (Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations for radio galaxy 3C284.0 = to study the morphology of the radio galaxy. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 = Galaxies: A PC Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxies = ESO358-059 and NGC-4203 in order to study their nuclear structure. This = is a part of a large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The = targets will cover a wide range in luminosity and environment. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Eleven Sets of FGS 6174 (Delta Mini-OFAD) The FGSs were used in the POS Mode to make astrometric observations = for Delta Mini-OFAD OF980, OF964, OF964, OF607, et. al, plus several = reference stars all of which are located in cluster M-35. This is to = calibrate the optical field angle distortion (OFAD). These calibrations = are needed to support astrometry with an error budget of +/-0.0027 = arcseconds RMS. During the third iteration of this proposal, a series of = commanded telemetry format changes resulted in much of the data for this = iteration to be lost. HSTAR 5391 was written. Otherwise, the remaining = observations were executed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were = noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5915 (Star Formation Histories of Dwarf Irregular = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make BVI observations for the isolated = dwarf irregular galaxy DD075 (class dI) which is located in the local = group in order to study its star formation history. This data will be = used to create color-magnitude and color-color diagrams and maps of = Population I and II stars. The observations were executed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed COSTAR/U and FOC/96 6162 (FOC Cycle 5 PSF Monitoring) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the = standard star BPM16274 and to monitor the point spread function of the = COSTAR optical system. The observations were completed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6095 (Hot Stellar Populations in Globular = Cluster Cores) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster = NGC-2808 to study the radial gradients of the hot stellar population in = its core region. Observations were made in the blue, violet and far = ultraviolet. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5845 (Polarization of Disks around T-Tauri) The PC and polarization filter POLQ were used to image the = nebulosity surrounding the T Tauri star HL-Tau. These data will test = various models for scattered light from central sources. Systematic = errors will be avoided by using one polarizer and allowing the spacescaft = roll to provide the rotation by observing the target three times at 120 = day intervals. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6003 (The Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies in = distant Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of elliptical galaxies in = distant galactic cluster Abell-370 to study the evolution of the structure = of these elliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxies NGC-2541 = and NGC-3198 looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The = purpose of this observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with = an accuracy of 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5969 (Large Population Studies of Globular = Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the very metal poor = globular cluster NGC-6341 (aka, M-92) for large population studies. The = data are for a long term study whose goal is to obtain very accurate = photometric data of all the post main-sequence (PMS) stars in prototype = galactic globular clusters. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed FOS/RD 6167 (FOS Cycle 5: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make several = dark calibration images. All exposures were internals. All spectra was = done in the image mode. The observations were completed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6043 (The Interaction of Supernovae with their = Curcumstellar medium) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both Red and Blue Sides) was used to = make ultraviolet observations of Type 3 supernova remnant SN1980K to study = its interaction with the curcumstellar medium and the supernova blast = wave, which itself is a product of the stellar wind from the supernova = progenitor. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure, medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5988 (Imaging Quasars in Rich Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of radio quasar 3C215 = which is located in a rich galactic cluster. There is evidence that = quasars in rich clusters of galaxies evolve more quickly than quasars in = poor environments. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 21 Successful : 21 At 338/032856Z and at 338/084050Z, there were losses of lock during Proposal FOS/BL 5843.
