HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1546 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/03/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/04/96 Daily Status Report as of 004/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6367 (High Resolution Imaging of Nearby Nuclear = Starbursts) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution images of the star = bursting nuclei in galaxy NGC-2903. Selected narrow and wide band passes = were used. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.2 Completed Five Sets of GHRS/1 6171 (CRIMP1: Cycle 5 = Condensed-Regimen Integrated Monitoring Program) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to obtain = darks, internal flats (in photoscan mode), wavelength calibrations and = observations of standard star BD+28D4211. This includes detector = calibration, sensitivity monitoring, and wavelength monitoring. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5984 (Absorption - Selected Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to study the morphology of galaxy UM18, at = redshifts from 0.4 to 1.0, that are absorbing light from background = quasars. The absorbing galaxies were discovered from ground-based = surveys. The observation was completed with no reported anomalies. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6172 (CRIMP2: Cycle 5 = Condensed-Regimen Integrated Monitoring Program) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to obtain = darks, internal flats (in photoscan mode), wavelength calibrations and = observations of standard star BD+28D4211. This includes detector = calibration, sensitivity monitoring, and wavelength monitoring. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5996 (The Morphology of Field Galaxies at High = Redshifts) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of several field = galaxies (Field-0302) in order to study their morphologies. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 5452 (Composition of Dark Material on = Iapetus: Cycle 4 Medium) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make observations of Saturn's moon Iapetus, which has a bright hemisphere and a = dark hemisphere. Ultraviolet spectra of both hemispheres were taken. = Spectra of Saturn's moon Rhea was also taken for comparison. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6341 (SN1978K: Probing the Shocked Ejecta) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the shocked ejecta = from Super Nova SN1978K which is located in the barred galaxy NGC-1313-03. = It is the only example of a very young remnant of known age which is = x-ray bright. The observation were completed as planned, and no anomalies = ere noted. 1.9 Completed FOS/BL 6244 (HR 4796A: A Possible Protoplanet?) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue side) was used to make = observations of object HR-4796A-O which is thought to be a possible = protoplanet system. This star is a main sequence A type star with more = circumstellar dust than is located around Beta Pic. The observations were = completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6099 (Black Holes and Cores of Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to search for possible black holes in the core = of nearby early-type galaxy NGC-5845. The WF/PC-2 will be used to obtain = high resolution images of its bright core, and to provide sufficiently = accurate coordinates for the FOS, which will be used to measure the = velocity dispersion around this galaxy. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 One acquisition, at 004/0621Z, failed to fine lock backup, on FGS # = 3 only. This event is documented in HSTAR 5427. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 16 Successful : 16 2.3 Operations Notes: Several temperature monitors exceeded their operational limits = during this operational day. Although higher than normal values for many = temperature parameters can be expected at this time of the year, all limit = violations were written up in individual HSTARs. The ESS, used for data analysis, is scheduled to be down today from = 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for maintenance and SM2 preparations. Should = priority jobs be required, the system can be made operational within 30 = minutes. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
