HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1549 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/11/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/16/96 Daily Status Report as of 016/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Decon) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark = calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures = to be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5913 (Low-Mass Binaries and = Luminosity Fuction) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low-mass binary = system NGP002 (late Type Class M dwarf stars). The intent is to determine = why the local stellar luminosity function is flat below Mv=3D12, while = that found from more distant stars falls by an order of magnitude by = Mv=3D14. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5994 (HST Images of New Candidates For Distant = Proto-Ellipticals) The WF/PC-2 was used to make an observation of blue compact galaxy = SA57-5482 in order to measure its size, light profiles, and color. The = observation was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/BL 6290 (The Ultraviolet Spectrum of the Crab Pulsar) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the Crab Pulsar (aka, = PSR0531+21). This is to measure its interstellar extinction, and the = extinction within the nebula. The observation were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed FOS/RD 5654 (Lyman Alpha Spectra of Discordant Redshift = Systems) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = Lyman-Alpha spectral observations of quasar PKS-1327-2, which apparently = is in the vicinity of a galaxy with a significantly lower redshift. It is = hoped to estimate the relative distance of each object. The observations = were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed GHRS/2 6249 (Observations of Interstellar Oxygen) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of star HD138690 in order to study = interstellar oxygen in the line of sight to that star. It was found = previously that the oxygen abundance in the direction of Orion is only = half of the solar abundance. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FOS/BL 6038 (Winds of Massive Stars in Nearby Galaxies, = the WR Stars) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the massive Wolf-Rayette star M-33-AM6 = which is located in the M-33 Galaxy in order to study its stellar winds. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed FGS 6271 (L726-8/UV Ceti) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the binary = star L726/UV Ceti to search for a short period low-mass companion around = either component of this binary object. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed GHRS/1 6069 (Unraveling the Complex Wind Outflow From = Zeta Auriga) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the star Zeta Auriga (aka, HD32068) in = order to study its complex wind outflow. This system in to be an = eclipsing binary system with a 972 day period. A wavelength calibrations = observation was also taken. The observations were completed as planned = and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5978 (Host Galaxy of Distant Radio Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the host galaxy of = distant radio-loud quasar QSO-1023+4. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5902 (Color-Magnitude Diagrams and the Internal = Structure of Globular Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of core region of the = globular cluster NGC-5824 in order to make a color-magnitude diagram and = study the internal structure of the cluster. The observations were = executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5962 (Young Globular Clusters in Merging = Galaxies: Part III) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of two merging galaxies = (aka, NGC-4038/4039) in order to study their compact young blue globular = clusters to determine their age, luminosity function, and physical = properties. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.14 Completed GHRS/1 5896 (Detailed Studies of High Velocity Ionized = Gas in Galactic Disks) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = observations of star HD35149 in order to study high velocity ionized gas = in its line of sight to help study the gas in our galactic disk. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6134 (Investigating the Nature of Circumstellar = Matter in Young Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to take broad band images of several young = star clusters associated with bright reflection nebula NGC-2068 in an = attempt to detect circumstellar (CS) material about the stars in these = clusters. The HST data will be combined with ground based near-IR and = millimeter data. The combined data is expected to determine the frequency = distribution of CS material and disks in undisturbed young clusters, the = size and mass distribution of CS nebulae, and the correlation of these = properties with stellar luminosity. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Eliptical Galaxy = Snapshots) The WF/PC-2 was used to survey FCC16, from a sample of 30 dwarf = eliptical galaxies. During the first set of these observations, the FGS = acquisition failed which was documented in HSTAR 5465. The second = observation was completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.17 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5919 (UV Evolution of Galaxies in a = Distant Cluster) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the = distant galactic cluster Abell-851 in order to study its ultraviolet = evolution. These observations are intended to test current ideas of the = age and metal abundance of distant systems. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5992 (The Host Galaxies and Environments of BL = Lacertae Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make short and deep observations of the BL = Lacertae class object MS1221+245. The short exposures will allow study of = the inner regions of the host galaxy. The longer exposures will allow a = search for faint galaxy companions and any interaction between the faint = companion and the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 5903 (The Origin and Nature of UV Bright stars = in Globular Clusters.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make blue, violet, and ultraviolet = observations of the globular cluster NGC-6205 in order to study its origin = and nature. The objectives are to study the horizontal branch mass = distribution in this cluster, and to search for blue straggler stars in = the core of the cluster. The observations were completed as scheduled, = and no problems were noted. 1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 5993 (Dark Matter Distribution in A1689 from = gravitational lensing) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy cluster = Abell-1689-1 in order to study the distribution of dark matter in the = lensing galaxy cluster system. This is to carry out an extensive survey = of the galaxies lying behind this cluster. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 Galaxies: A PC = Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxy = NGC-2328 in order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a = large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover = a wide range in luminosity and environment. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.22 Completed WF/PC-2 6332 (The Circumnuclear Regions of Seyfert = Galaxies LRF Part: cycle 4 Medium) The WF/PC-2 and the linear ramp filter (LRF) were used to make = observations for the circumnuclear regions of Seyfert ESO428-G14 in both = emission and continuum. From the data the PI expects to derive sufficient = evidence to confirm or refute a suggested model of Seyfert Type 2 = galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 6184 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Photometric Calibration = Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet and optical observations = of standard star GRW+70D582 in order to monitor the photometric = calibrations of the camera and to check for decontamination. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.24 Completed FGS 6037 (Continuation of an Astrometric Search for = Planetary Companions to Proxima-Cent) The FGSs were used in the POS mode to make astrometric observations = of the star Proxima-Cent and a sub-set of eight reference stars. This is = to look for the presence of a planetary companion. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.25 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky survey = observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel with = the prime science observations. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.27 Completed FGS 6051 (Dynamical Masses For The Stars in the Pre-Main = Sequence Spectroscopic Class) The FGS were used to make astrometric measurements of the location = of star STAR-04560 (aka, GSC2387+535) to measure its relative orbit in a = pre-main sequence binary system. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.28 Completed FGS 6036 (Detection and Mass Determination of Low Mass = Companions to nearby M Dwarf) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS Modes to make = astrometric observations of low mass companions to M class dwarf star = GJ1081 and four reference stars. This will lead to a mass determination = for the stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.29 Completed FGS 6049 (Monitoring the Size and Shape of Mira Type = Stars) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Mira = class star HD120285 in order to study its size and shape during different = phases of its pulsation cycle. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.30 Completed FOS/BL 6206 (FOS Polarimetry Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to determine the most useful = spectropolarimetric modes by making observations of standard star = BD+64D106. The investigators will determine the locations of the = polarization spectra, the transmission of the polarizer, the angles of the = Wollaston prisms and waveplates in celestial coordinates, and the = instrumental polarization. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.31 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.32 Completed WF/PC-2 5463 (Buried QSOs in IRAS-Selected Ultra = luminous AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the luminous IRAS = active galactic nuclei of galaxy MARK463E to try to resolve the polarized = scattering regions in its core.
